Epic won't boot!

Hey All,

Ran into a frustrating problem today. I've been shooting on my Epic with the 2B to 1B power adaptor hooked up to an original Red charger (100W). Previous to today I've never had a problem booting up. Now it's really hit and miss.

I press on, it will start up probably 1/4th the time, or... it will think about starting up (red light turns on), then the red light comes back on. Or... the red light will turn off and the fans will blow inconsistently with no other action (I have to yank the power when this happens... yikes!).

Today was the first time I used the Optitek mount as well, but the problem persisted even when I changed back to PL.

Any ideas guys? I filed a support ticket, but so far haven't heard anything from RED.

From what I understand, even though Epic only drains 60w and the Red charger outputs 100W, it is not recommend to power the camera.
Have you tried booting from redvolts?

See what happens tomorrow, RED was closed today. Tech support was supposed to be available, but sometimes the support tickets need a little help getting pushed through (my experience, anyway), or better yet to contact via phone.

And, as David mentioned, you SHOULD NOT be powering the EPIC with the RED One power adapter. Hate to say it's a possibility, but you may have cooked it. :-(

Try changing back to PL, remove all power (power adapter, red volts in side handle etc) then hold in power button for 30 secs before releasing power button, reconnecting power and attempting reboot. Good luck!

Rating : The EPIC AC power adaptor is rated for 150W, but RED ONE units may be either 150W or 100W depending on the version of sensor in the RED ONE.

FCC : EPIC is a Class B device, which requires all accessories to also be certified as Class B, however RED ONE and it's AC power adaptors are certified as Class A.

That means although a RED ONE 150W AC power adaptor has enough capacity to run an EPIC, we can't sell you one for that purpose or endorse the use of that.

And finally any modification to the product will invalidate the FCC certification, so we can't recommend that you do that.

These rules may sound restrictive, but they are there for a good reason and we respect them.

... is there a problem using the original Red One power supply (100W) with a RedOne-MX as a backup? Does the MX sensor pull that much more power than an M chip? In other words, is the 100W supply now a doorstop or can it power the RedOne-MX as a backup if my 150W supply dies?

Unless you have a lot of high current draw accessories attached, that should be fine...

I don't suspect the Optitek mount has anything to do with this issue. It has no electronics, so I don't see how it could be a factor. Jeff's right about the original R1 power adapter. But I don't expect that it's likely to be as dire as Jeff suggests (but I'm an optimist, and we're both just guessing.) But I do think that it's a good possibility that the firmware is tweaked. i'd suggest force-installing the firmware again if you can.

But think it would RED would have some sort of disclaimer shipped with that cable / Stuart said on the boards it WON'T fry it.) I'm in LA so I'll pickup a new charger tomorrow and see if that helps.

Would love to get some official word as to whether or not I could have messed things up with the old charger....

You haven't fried it...

The same thing happen to us on a shoot in India... A firmware glitch was to blame...

A forced firmware upgrade usually fixes it... (has happened to others in past builds) but in the case of the INDIA Epic, it had to go back to RED.

But you haven't cooked it.

Thanks Mark, was your issue a combination of using a wrong charger resulting in a firmware issue...? Or was it just an independent firmware issue?

Purely that... Firware.

We use different chargers and batteries all the time...

If the power is low, it simply wont turn on. The camera needs a particular amount of voltage and no less...

Your case is similar to 2 EPICs I've seen do it... the same start up issues. Dig around on the forum, some guys have done forced firmware installs and managed to get it going again.

What version of firmware are you running on the camera? As Mark said there were some older firmware versions that could hang on boot. However, there are no known boot issues with 1.7.10 or 2.0.5. If you are running one of these later versions and reinstalling the firmware fixes your problem please send in a log file with your support ticket so we can take a look.

I think it's 2.0.5, I took delivery of this camera a couple weeks ago (Epic X 1215).

The camera DOES boot up every so many times... (I'm not going to use that charger anymore though or I'd check to see what firmware it is). Trent, can you confirm that this 100W charger didn't fry my cam... would sure make sleeping easier tonight.

I'll send a log file if I flash the firmware tomorrow and it fixes it, but I'll try a new power supply first. Thanks all.

Good news. Went to RED studios today and picked up a new charger, did the trick. I think something's wrong with the old 100W, it is making a high pitched sound today... retired.

I stopped using the Red Charger as a camera power source a few years ago. Was often bad luck even with the Red One.

Not to revive an old thread, but has anyone had this happen lately? I have a camera out on a job with startup issues (I have another one with a different power issue, but that's another thread)
Anyone get this glitch and solve it by a firmware reinstall?
