While trying to figure out why so many people want to have a machined Epic when there is really nothing about the camera you want to open in the first place, I was thinking what Red could do so you would want to open the Epic. My mind then jumped to PCI cards, 3D, Scarlet and the old Bolex lens configurations. How difficult would it be to build a single camera with paired lenses where the data is recorded on to paired tracks on a single disk (or matched disks)? This would make the camera very light allowing for flexability. An SSD pack could be worn either as a battery clip, in camera or shirt pocket clip to keep the cables as short as possible. This keeps weight off the camera and on the body.

I don't read many camera mags, so this concept might not be new. But I don't recall anything like this being discussed in Reduser before. Anyway, if Red is looking for what to do after the Epic saga, here's a thought for management. Remember the pictures of Scarlet fixed? Now look at it with two lenses. Cute, cuddly and a knockout.

Fuji makes one of these - for $399. Love to see RED do something along these lines on the high end

Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera

Sad thing about the fuji is that the big advantage of the fuji style is you could have a very tight intraocular given the small lens sizes - say an inch or inch and a half for doing closer subjects - instead they went 75mm.

Something like a Scarlet 2/3 with two mini prime lens mounts as close as possible would be really cool.

I've never understand, with all the hype created around 3d, the whole industry likely to be interested in going s3d, why Red has not embraced this opportunity for 500% and developped an easier solution then beamsplitters.

If you have a look at the Ikonoskop 3d camera that's listed on their site, the dutch camera one system, and maby some others in the pipeline, they would have rocked coming up with a solution to be able to shoot 3d directly on a professional level in 1 camera housing.

I'm sure they must be able to pull this of in the short time, they have designed such wonderful things, just can't see why they don't do any extra development on this side except letting cameras being able to slave to eachother.

Right now beam splitters are the only way to have the full range of flexibility usually demanded of every aspect of film making. As of right now a fixed dual lens system will not be able to create the optimal 3d experience across the range of shots necessary.

Also they are not making them hand machine "so that you can get inside them". Production will be a full CNC automated line, casting, or a combination there of.

The pre-production models are done one by one, by hand / machine. Thats all.
