The reason when I first bought a RED was because in theory I wouldn't be sacrificing my DSLR option for cool images, on the MX to be honest the Still images was pretty sad compared to my DSLR, I haven't used that much the EPIC-W but this Images came out pretty cool.

What do you guys think?

Best

True, i only find r3d from one reduser (shot with helium).

Have you seen reduser posts and stills workshop by Ketch Rossi?

Here is another still in BW at Night from the Helium at 8k WS

I've been tied up with a lot of editing, but I am planning a few more fashion and glamour shoots that I'm going to be using my Helium for in the next couple of weeks. I'll also dig up some of the R3Ds from my first test shoot and share them. (Feel free to remind me. :) )

The Epic MX and Dragon are perfectly fine to capture great stills, exposure is the key, granted they don't like low light.....something the weapon/ helium fixes but as long as you have a decent exposure you can get fantastic results.

Seeing your work makes me excited for summer when it'll be warm enough to do that sort of thing again ;)

Those images look great, no surprise.

Honestly, the only reasons that I hadn't been considering using Red cameras for stills before Helium are that Epic-W is my first Red ;) and the resolution wasn't really sufficient for print work at the sizes I'm aiming for. IMO 6K is enough, 8K is pretty much a match for my Sony A7r in terms of resolution, but shows more pleasing color rendition and detail, at least IMO.

I guess it comes down to where your work ends up but for me the resolution for print has never been an issue. I dont shoot much print work and for what little work I have done, 14-16mpx is perfectly fine, don't let that hold you back. Its certainly a different way of shooting compared to DSLR, but its fun and you end up with some very amazing results.

Mostly it's been for galleries, so the print sizes have been 24x30, so the 14 megapixels wasn't really enough for what I was doing. 36 megapixels prints very nicely at that size though. I generally avoid uprezzing these, since they're landscape images with a lot of detail, but with 8K I don't need to uprez, just change the aspect ratio a little bit. Personally, I'm finding that I like the less square aspect ratio of the Helium sensor more than the 135 frame, so for me it's a plus rather than a minus.

You're right though, it is fun and the results are beautiful. :)

The stills from MX weren't bad. I used them for posters. The stills from Helium are damn near perfect.

what fps and what shutter angle do you guys use?

I shot with mine and stills resolution/quality is quite amazing.
I run some not so scientific tests before hand, comparing the Helium to Canon 5D III using the same lenses (Sigma ART), and with my Leica M. Leica M has a different "feeling" to it. But sharpness and quality the RED is pretty much the same or above. Canon creates much worst stills.

Compared to the Epic Dragon, files are so much cleaner and sharper for stills. Helium felt a bit more digital than Dragon, though. I was shooting before the new color was in place. I'd like to see how it works with it.
