I've traveled to different parts of the world in the last few years and I've never had anyone stop me about my camera. Security yes, but never customs. I'm told I need to fork out $4000 to reclaim my camera. Is this normal? Advice? Please help.

YES! I've travel to Peru several times, first time i had to pay the 20% tax on the camera and than i got it back when i left the country, make sure you have enough time to reclaim it took about 3hr. I just got back from Peru two weeks ago and this time i got a journalist visa and had to show them that when i arrived.

Also be careful if you are going to famous places as they will require a permit as well. We always use a local fixer to arrange all of that.

Good luck.

Thanks for the insight. Spoke to Maxim and he steered me the right way. Still no camera though. :(

Going to put this out there just in case someone's listening. Any RED camera owners in Peru? I need to speak to you!

Please PM me.

Thanks for posting this Tom.

I t helps any REDuser who is travelling to at least double check the rules with whatever country they might be entering.

Hope you get it back. Next time get a Carnet when going into a foreign country. You still might get hung up but they won't seize it or make you pay anything. Best of luck getting it back in your hands.

Just in Countries that accept the Carnet.

The last i know of Peru was not one of them (my knowledge is from Early 2016)

EDIT: just checked - Peru doesn't have the ATA Carnet yet. see the official List here:
http://www.atacarnet.com/carnet-countries

To add to the equipment travel craziness, you can add Jamaica, and Bermuda to the list of countries where you will need to leave a deposit at customs when entering the country with gear unless you have a fixer. You still need to pay the fixer though.

You are welcome they are the best fixers i've worked with in any country. Yeah i don't do Carnets as the don't work everywhere and and you have to keep updating them.

Just look at the import laws of each county and follow those, typically if you get a journalist visa they'll let you bring you stuff in or i just rent locally.

Thanks for the fixer contact in Peru. We always need good contacts to advise our clients when a carnet won't work.

Great thread. Every travelling filmmaker should know the law of the land(s).
