Epic W not recognizing modules

Was really excited to pick up my Epic W yesterday for a shoot this weekend. However, it will not accept the base IO and DSMC 2 Side handle. No buttons work on the side handle, and it does not show up as an attached module.

The base expander will power the camera with AC, but the display states "UNKWN." SDI and other ports do not work. The expander also does not show up as an attached module.

I have tried removing all modules, reattaching, I also have reloaded the firmware and reset the camera multiple times.

I have a DSMC2 top handle, which works just fine. My lemo A adapter is also working fine.

This is really disappointing, as the camera cant send out tap to video village, and is unrentable in its current state.

In addition the base expander arrived with all the lables faded. This is purely cosmetic but a major bummer when you buy something new.

I filed a support ticket, but Red does not have weekend support. Red does a lot of great things, but its really frustrating to buy something and to right off the bat not work the way it needs to.

Have you tried the re-discover HW option under maintenance? Maybe remove side handle and try it with the base expander first.

I saw UNKWN once with a Redvolt XL. Next reboot it showered proper power.

Are you using the lemo A on the top or side?

Hey Stacey, thanks so much for your reply! I tried moving the Lemo to the top and that got the base expanded working, which is the most important function!

Still mo luck with my side handle though!

My Epic-W wouldn't recognize my Base Expander module though I could power the camera through it. Couldn't use the HDMI or SDI out. Went to RED Store Hollywood and they verified the issue with my module even though their demo camera's module worked on my Epic-W. Sent the module to RED HQ and they tested it and said they found nothing wrong with it. Not sure what's going on. They are going to do more tests and get back to me.

One thing to be aware of, if you were not already, is that the side pogo pins and the HDMI output are mutually exclusive.

Hi David,

Any updates on this? I am having the same issue, and now I am currently on a shoot in Kenya. Hopefully you were able to fix it.

Cheers

Turns out my Epic-W had a bad board inside it. Thankfully under warranty. Had to send the brain in for repair.
