To me, as it should, the Epic has a definite EDGE over the Scarlet in terms of the 'thickness' and 'range' off the image. Do other people feel the same? I feel like the Red One MX still looks better than the Scarlet as well... People that are buying the Scarlet keep telling me that it's just like an Epic but without the high frame rates and the 5k but I think there's something more going on than just that. I love my Epic. It's the best camera I've ever used and the only camera where I feel like there is ZERO compromising.

Considering that you can do everything you like with RAW footage I think that the only way to judge if one camera looks better, "thicker" or has more range than the other one is to shoot something in identical conditions, with identical lenses, identical settings, grade everything the same and then compare.

Everything else is just a "personal perception".

In terms of specs Epic beats Scarlets hands down and I would get an Epic in a heartbeat if I could afford it now. But still Scarlet is a fantastic offer for it's price/performance. I doubt anyone will be able to beat that in the near 2-3 years.

Rick,

it looks that you are still living in a kind of stone age with IQ (image quality) full of high noise.

It's 2012 and a right time to move on!!!!

what are the real differences between epic and scarlet beside the frame rates
and the weight anyway?

e.g. scarlet does 16 bit processing as well, doesn't it?

the advantage of the scarlet is that we will not see boring slowmos all over the place.

Thank you for saying it. I shoot a lot of Phantom footage in the 1000 FPS range, and while I think its awesome look to add to a project, I can't stand when everything is shot slow motion. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

We have yet to do serious side by side tests. But sort of anecdotally Epic and Scarlet at 4k seem to be producing comparable images. And I believe 'officially' that is 'supposed' to be the case.

We'll be shooting some r1-MX with Scarlet next week as well, so that I'm looking forward to.

hi.
what means comparable images, is there any difference between both, shooting the exact same settings, lenses, action etc. pp...?

For the Scarlet, if you shoot at the same fps/resolution/redcode the image looks the same as if you'd shot on Epic, for which there is footage available and finished movies for you to view. That is the appeal of the Scarlet, for within the hardware fps/resolution/redcode constraints the camera may say Scarlet, but the image is 100% Epic.

Graeme
According to Graeme, the Epic and Scarlet have the exact same image quality, when shooting 4K at the same frame rate and Redcode...

Rick, can you please be more specific? Do you mean better color depth by ' thickness '? Or dynamic range by 'range'? Since you have both, can you post tests or frame grabs? I considered getting an EPIC but went for a Scarlet on the presumption that 4K was the same/identical.
