  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey guys,

Just curious how you guys are doing time lapses with your epics, I'd like to do a time lapse with an Epic soon and wondering how you guys are accomplishing it since it is not yet available in the firmware. Any special remotes you have rigged up?

Here's a video I did of just timelapse shot all on Epic.

You can set the frame rate to 1fps and the shutter to 1sec. Just make sure you have a Black Shade calibration saved for that setting. This will get rid of the hot pixels that you will see otherwise.

F*cking sick. What are you using for the motion? A Kessler cine-slider with motor?

Also, I'm guessing the Epic is shooting at 1fps right?

Dope dude.

Watching the Moon move was AWESOME!

I have achieved a 1fps black shade on my Scarlet using firmware 3.0.6, so I'd think it'd be possible, but can't tell you for sure, on the Epic.

Has anyone been able to actually achieve a black shade at 1 sec exposure time? Last time I tried I had to roll back to 1/2 s or it would pick up too much light and fail.

Everytime I install a new build I re-blackshade my Epic. I do 2 BSC, one for 24fps motion and another for 1fps 1sec exposures. The 24fps one is the factory default BSC and the 1fps 1sec exposure is under the user BSC profile. You can switch between the 2 in the BSC menu.

All the motion control in that video was done using a Kessler Cineslider and the Shuttle Pod. The pan/tilt was done using a telescope head and the Dynamic Perception MX2 controller.

Does firmware 3.0.6 enable 1fps on Scarlet??

BTW, beautiful time lapses Andrew!

1fps is already enabled. with touchscreen hold the fps and input 1fps. With the side handle press up when selector is on fps, input 1fps. took me awhile to figure this out with the side handle :)

Wow, that looked sick! Any idea how I can make something like that work on my R1MX?

On the R1MX my biggest problem was getting rid of all the hot pixels. Even with a BSC at those settings. Maybe the new builds on the R1 has been able to deal with that problem. But I remember being able to get 1sec exposures in the 1fps setting.

Nice work! Thanks for the tips...

was kinda hoping to do one frame ever couple of seconds but 1 frame a second will be great for now!

Was one of those timelapses done without a flare guard? It had crazy flares moving through the frame. Looked really cool.

Yeah, that pan right and up shot of LA was done without the flare guard. It did look pretty cool. But now I have the flare guard in because most of the time its was a pain in the ass. I could always take it out if I wanted it to be crazy flare like before.

The Red ONE is indeed capable of achieving extraordinary time-lapse images... more so now than what Epic or Scarlet are capable of (hopefully that will change soon.)

This piece here is 2nd unit cinematography captured entirely with a off the shelf Red ONE with a straight forward Mysterium sensor.

Excellent work, Andrew!

Because I live in PAL territory, I shoot a project rate of 25p. For this reason I've been performing separate BSCs for ever major frame rate change because the default doesn't match my frame rate.. I suppose that the 24 fps calibration is probably close enough to use at 25 fps? Ideally it would be good to be able to store a few more calibration maps.

Nice work joe I'm working in New Mexico working now and this forum has inspired me to go out again for some more Lapses knowing my time here is almost done and I don't know when I'll get back.
To all just make sure you do a black balance at the lower frame rates. This will help a lot as I found out the hard way.
