  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC short film "Photo booth" wins third at Tropfest

Great work. I thought it was top 3 for sure, mostly because of your photography.

Used RED PRO PRIMES, shot in 5KWS. I wanted a really oversharp crunchy look, really desaturated with popping highlights especially in the close ups to make their eyes jump and think we managed it. Flat colour palette with the only colours having any saturation to them is the RED on the curtain door, blood, car, fire etc and also the blue in the main characters eyes. It should be online soon from Tropfest and will link here to it when done.

Wow, that's some nice DP work. I loved the whole look. May I ask which Red Primes you used for this? Or was it pretty much the whole set?

Thanks for all the thoughts people. I never mentioned that the majority of people working on this film were film students (including all the producers) completing their course or have very limited experience in the industry. All quite young but very committed, talented and were great to work with. So it's a great result for all these people and I think they did a great job.
The film was graded in Da Vinci by Joe Lancaster out of Chop Shop Post here in Brisbane. He did a great job, especially as I was only able to give him a graded frame to match the look I wanted and basic direction as I was overseas on a shoot for a month during the grade. And as with all these zero budget films they did it for the love of the job.

In reference to some other questions, power lines were left in as it want necessary to have them out, it's a war zone and could be anywhere. Plus the fact I has about a 45 degree angle to shoot the whole scene on the ridge due to buildings and roads everywhere else:) Lesser of two evils by a long way. And as I said, wasn't necessary to take out later as it didn't matter for the location.

Sound issues, they were not professional sound recordists and using the most basic of basic gear, more student graduates without extensive resources or especially funds. Again, 95% of the crew and production were film students conpleting the course at QPIX (the funding and training organisation) and recent graduates... and they did a great job.

Had a whole set of RPP's to work with on my EPIC, nothing like them to give that ultra sharp clean look...not that you can easily tell on a compressed dodgy Vimeo copy anyway. The fish eye was the good old Peleng 8mm PL on eBay for about $500...used it a few times now!

Enjoyed it. Nice framing and pacing. As for the halos... I'm pretty sure they are during the colour grade. They are power windows used to brighten the characters of the similar colored background. It probably looked fine on higher end monitors. Vimeo could have made it more contrasty which made it more obvious. I noticed it throughout the whole video but many may not notice. Not trying to nit-pic... it's such a good piece I just wanted it to be perfect! Great job again!

Bob, you may be correct with the Halo's, I'll check with the colourist and get more info. On my copy it doesn't become apparent but certainly does when compressed down. Guess these things happen when your not there supervising on a grade. There were a few other things that borhered me like some soft shots here and there that were used, but in the end it's not too bad and not being able to input much after the shoot except for some graded tiffs for the colourist to go off, I think they all did pretty well. But definitely interesting re the power windows...I'll check it out. Cheers

It looked a lot like rushes power windows on the night, Brigham - nothing that couldn't be cleaned up and re-rendered if they still have the project file...
