Are the framerates listed available at full resolution or do we still have to use a windowed portion of the sensor to achieve those rates?

Yes, published framerates are for full resolution

Wooohooo!

One would think it could do higher framerates in a windowed mode ala R1.

Is there any word on what windowing modes the different cameras will support?

So the 617 can have faster frame rates than 645?

Scarlet is smaller and cheaper because there are less electronics, including compression engine boards, and lower data rates (less heat to deal with).

I'll try to post the chart of target frame rates in a day or two, but Scarlet does not have the flexibility of the RED ONE in terms of format options and frame rate versatility.

Jim, I'm frantically reading all this stuff, and my hat is off to you! There are many of us who promoted this idea of FF35mm and *cough!* very large frames similar to IMAX! And you listened!! Thank you!

As suspected, it looks like Epic is primed and ready to essentially TAKE OVER the motion picture industry, which probably has Sony and Panavision and a few other companies shaking in their boots and basically pissing their pants today.

The one thing that occurs to me, however, is that Scarlet S35mm and FF35mm really need to offer at least some overcranking. Even 48fps or 60fps would be enough. But total lack of overcranking in Scarlet 35mm is going to be a problem. For a good setup with decent glass you're probably talking 15 or 20 grand - as much as an economy car. People are really, REALLY going to want some basic overcranking. Perhaps you could offer a 60p Scarlet for a couple grand more? Virtually everyone would pay it, would be my guess. :)

I never thought I say this, but there is only one danger, and that is making Scarlet TOO GOOD. :) Better having this a really basic-low-cost cam, and make Epic the best of the best.

Tom, you are a very wise dude and I always enjoy your posts and as usual, I agree with you. I've been doing a lot of calculating today, to see if I would want to go for a s35 Scarlet or my original plan of the R1 (I was supposed to take delivery early last month but held off because of the economy). When I look at the s35 Scarlet, I actually think a decent, basic setup will run closer to 30 grand - probably more.

To start, you have a $7000 brain. This brain has no audio capabilities and, from what I've seen on the renders, no user interface. I've seen a power button, but no menu system for selecting project settings, etc. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Automatically, you have to buy two modules(the breakout box and the Redmote or something like it) to give your brain the same capabilities as the R1 body. I have no idea how much the modules will cost, but I'm assuming they will not be incredibly cheap.

So then, when you add the two modules, you have a body that is about $7000 less than the Red One body. The basic R1 package I was looking at was around 40,000 so I'm assuming that the Scarlet s35 package would be about 33,000 with the same capabilities.

The RedOne at 40 grand was a steal, the Scarlet at 33 grand is obviously even better, but if the scarlet can't do what the One can.... I'd probably rather pay the extra 7k and have more functionality. But then I don't have the upgrade path or modularity that comes with the new systems. Like Tom asked, do you think there'd be a way to add a couple thousand to the scarlet brain and get some basic overcranking?

ALSO, I love everything you guys at Red have come up with and will be buying a Red camera of some kind no matter what. I have to say that because I feel like a greedy bastard asking for more stuff, when what you've done already is so mindblowingly awesome.

The problem with making Scarlet too good, is that all people start doing the math and realize that they can replace the R1 kit with a less expensive smaller kit with better quality. If there where just one Scarlet with attached lens that could shoot 3k, then all would just get that cam ALSO and keep the R1 kit, and eventually get a Epic when the economy allow.

The other issue is that Scarlet also need to compete against DSLR cams, and need to be very hires.

If the Scarlet cams just shoot 3k video and shoot 6k stills, then they would not get on to the way of R1 or Epic... and peace on earth... :)

No problem from the yours and mine point. I gladly pay less for a extremely good product, but it can also lead to the R1 will drop in price very fast, and that RED won't sell as much Epic as planned. Sooner or later this is bad for all of us.

The RED ONE will eventually drop in value, just like any other piece of technology ever made. But that's why Jim's offer of a trade in at FULL VALUE is so unprecedented. Based on the specs and the price, I think they will sell plenty of Epics... there is no other camera like it at any price that I have seen - even on the drawing board - from other companies.

Am I reading that chart correctly when I see that the two 2/3" scarlets will be able to do 3K at 120Hz, while the FF35 can only do it at 60Hz (for triple the price)?
