Is it possible that a major RED competitor could sabotage the EPIC program by buying up key components from Japan that they don't really need and use their power and industry relationships to demand those suppliers fill their orders first?

I know this ranks high on the conspiracy theories list but I just had to pose the question. This is the movie business after all and there is a lot of jealousy and fear (motive) over what RED has accomplished.

I actually considered the possibility of this too. I even wondered about past delays and if that might have been a factor.

As far as conspiracy theory, I don't think it's that farfetched to make happen. But who knows if it would happen?

Well Apple has locked up / tied up LCD supplies, paying billions and making it real tough for other players. I think this is normal.

But their are always many ways to adjust to such market situations.

This stuff goes on all the time but all it does is encourage the growth of alternative suppliers. With the problems faced by suppliers in the Northern part of Japan I'm sure many companies across Asia are looking at ramping up to take advantage of the shortages. It's just business sense. As the parts missing from Epic are only small and small in number, I'm sure Red is doing all they can to find alternative sources and those sources will pop up to fill the gap.

Conspiracy theories?

Let's be honest, if competitors thought they EPIC was THAT much of a threat, they would have skipped to 6K instead of trying to market anything less then 4K.
Marketing is their target right now...but educated people know better then to listen to marketing, play with the camera and find out for ones self before purchasing...

If it gets that bad that marketing doesn't even help, then maybe we can move towards conspiracy theories if they are still doing less then 5K

There is no reason to suspect anything... people are struggling. End of story.
