  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC RENTAL RATE THESE DAYS

Its just like when someone asks me my rate.. I base it on the project.. I guess as an owner op I can do that.. Honestly I really have no interest in taking away from rental companies, I just wish we could get a standard rte that would take a lot of the guess work out of it.. Tha would be to easy....

Here in New England hardly I can get over 1K for a full package for big budget projects. The client turn around and get other camera model or rent the Epic package from a couple of desperate red owners based in this area for less than 500 bucks! !!!

Here in Raleigh, NC, we do $1500 for an entire Epic package and that includes a DIT/Data Wrangler. I guess it really depends on the market you're in. We still don't rent ours that much even for that price as there are only so many jobs with decent budgets around.

Let's UNIONIZE!!!! all for $2000 a day say I!!! ;-)

Epic BODY ONLY (no other accessories) goes for about $2500 here in Michigan... that's from a well known rental company (No affiliation with them).

Why feel guilty? It's not like there are no other EPICs out there from which clients have availability to.

Build your brand. If that's what people are paying for your top notch services, it's totally fair business.

Before moving to Dubai, there were times I could make $3,500 for a day and a half of minimal shooting in a music studio there in Hollywood.

Yes, but you were working for them as a DP (from what it sounds) if you're DPing all bets are off. There are no two DPs or directors alike. My wife and I often charge way more than that, just for us, no gear. Gear is a bit more of a commodity - not 100% a commodity, but more in that direction.

I find that good rental companies are charging around $1850 with those AKS and SSDs. With a good rental company you have a bigger chance of great service and backup bodies and AKS.

They have higher overhead and are in the business of renting cameras and lenses. I find that I always rent my Epic out in conjunction with a rental house. I know we all want to make money on our REDs but believe me we DO NOT want to see the demise of the rental house.

IMHO

+1 We NEED rental houses, or else we will eb stuck shooting with what we own, will never learn new tricks. We own A LOT of stuff, but rent extra stuff on just about every project.

To the OP, if that rate includes you, and your time, then that's completely different. I thought you were just talking about your gear. My rate has nothing to do with gear, and is the same no matter what we are shooting on, and is not flat. It has provisions for overtime and meal penalties with provisions for turn around - whether it's union or not. Never ever do flat rates.

Justin, have you tried the RentMe app for iOS?

Would be interesting to know what result you will get by letting it calculate the price for you, and how close this price will be to your $2000.

Edit: I just went ahead out of pure curiosity and added all your gear to my RentMe app, combined everything into a package and here's the software's verdict

So you definitely don't have to feel guilty :)

Also be aware that many studios doing network TV ban any DP from using their own camera. Their assistants may sub rent their gear through a rental house but the studios feel it is a conflict of interest for the DP to choose EPIC or Alexa and own that camera.

I don't agree with this but it exists

In China (studios) we had to hire there kits.... And leave all our gear in the boot of the car out in the car park.
We could only bring in what they didnt have..

Real mafia stuff.

What they don't think about is return business... We wont be going back there again.

Thanks for doing this, I will have to check out the APP!!

I don't do DRY Rental, but for those cameras EPIC packages that are out for months, I did it, more so as an investment,
I'll sale them all once they return, as I don't want to ever again deal with Rental and support.

Any ways, in this particular situation, been a 6 camera package the deal was for $1,800 per Day per Camera package per 3 Day week.

When I go for hire with the full package, as Cinematographer, including support, DIT suit, additional Power and SSD's,
then the fee is $5,000+ per DAY, each day I work, even so we always give extra hours and extra days... ;)

If I'm Producing/Directing the project as well, then I charge 10k+ per day, rules and charges apply to each project differently of course.
