  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC... ready.

Yes! As long as the Nikon mount is ready by Stage 3 that would be awesome in my book.

Congrats Red team... I can't wait to hold an Epic in my hands! Thank you in advance.

Omar

I think we talk too much to get an Oscar... :-) Doesn't matter. If our customers are happy, that's good enough for us.

Jim

Precisely, Mr. Jannard. Who cares about an Oscar?

Now, I'm not flouting the statue, but the film industry has been rattled to its core. Cinematic storytelling has effectively been wrested from the grips of its historical power structure. This is the tool I would dream about when I was shooting my first set of 290's back at 'SC. "If only we had the ability to do this. Or that. Or this." EPIC DOES IT ALL. AND THEN SOME.

I have been waiting for a tool with EPIC's capabilities since my first days at USC film, and now that it's here I can barely believe it. So that's why I say, "Who cares about an Oscar?" Although, if RED were to be recognized by the establishment it was designed to fell that would be an enormous testament to your accomplishment. But it's really not necessary. We all know you deserve it, but it's completely irrelevant. You do not need a statue to commemorate what you have achieved.

We are all EXTREMELY PROUD of you, sir. Thank you so much for your time, commitment and pursuit of excellence. I am a RED supporter for LIFE. REALLY. FOR LIFE.

All the best,

Eryc Tramonn

BTW, I recall you writing that you attended 'SC. If you don't mind me asking, what did you study?

I caught the film bug, and was lucky enough to have a GPA and portfolio decent enough to get me into 'SC. Let's just say my view of the industry, and the world for that matter, was extremely naive at the time.

But it was certainly eye opening for a kid from nowhere Louisiana to see a Ferrari parked in the loading dock with a bow on it. While it must be awesome to be able to do that, let's just say, that's not the universe I come from.

I had to figure out the hard way that we don't always shine due to merit alone. So, the greatest compliment I can offer at this point, sir, is to use the tool you have bestowed upon us to kick some major ass. Like so many others, I have already started. And I'm never going to look back. Personally, I don't give a damn about an Oscar. The point is...I can say exactly what I choose to at this point, and do so in a manner that rivals what has historically only been possible at the studio level for a price point that at one time you couldn't shoot Super 8 for. I have made my way into a few financed circles, and these guys only care about your ability to increase their bottom-lines with awesome marketing campaigns. If you've got the skills...the money is there. They are willing to bypass the ad agencies and go straight to talented producer and crews able to work professionally and outside the system.

Unfortunately, I have not purchased a camera YET, I'm effectively "renting" it because I know owners. But the point is I'm using it, and it's producing brilliant imagery. And when it makes financial sense for me to own one...you better believe I will. I would invest every cent I have in you.

Here's to the new age of content creation and digital distribution. You are AWESOME, Jim.

A million thanks.

EPIC was officially declared ready for production today. We have prototypes that pass all the requirements we set out the past few months. That means we will finish the Tattoo program and put Tattoos on special jobs and begin ordering all the parts and pieces (over 18,000) to begin production. It will take a bit of time to set up the line and gather all we need, but the end is in sight.

Just to be clear, not every feature is currently enabled, but the most important ones are and the build seems very stable as a foundation. We expect 95% of the features to be ready by the time production EPICs are released.

This is a pretty big day.

Jim

Any word on distribution? Will orders only be through RED like the ONE, or will be able to buy them from retailers?

RED Team,

I am selling my beloved Canon 400mm f/2.8L IS USM and buying the Epic. I'm sad to see it go, but I know the Epic will be revolutionary, and I want to be part of it!

So happy to hear it. Thanks to the team for the remarkable ride and the amazing education - just got back from shooting Phase 1 of my dream job and about to negotiate the next phase. Thanks to RED for being RED and to the series of fortunate events which brought me to this point. Can't wait to wrap my mitts around EPIC. I remember pacing the floor with excitement, waiting on the delivery truck for RED ONE. I'm sure it will be the same waiting on an EPIC delivery.

What is it about camera technology that brings out the crazy in us??

Can anyone at RED offer a ballpark figure for the amount of time between when Stage 2 Epic ships and Stage 3 Epic shipments might begin?

I am in both stages and have no idea where I fall within either of them, but getting a ballpark figure based on how long it would be between the beginning of the two stages based on a linear model could be useful.

P.S. If you do this and something happens you cannot meet the projections, I will personally answer each complaining poster who starts by saying "But you promised!!....

I too am curious about this and plan to be in both stages. The simple answer is, Red will deliver the stage three's after all stage two's are shipped. I would assume that Red will start taking deposits for stage three soon, while stage two cameras are being shipped.

Pretty sure it's only through RED. I think Scarlet was initially going to be available through some retailers, but that was before the whole 'everything has changed' stage, so I think it may be only available from RED as well.

That suits me though - I've heard about RED's great customer support, and I'd much rather be buying straight from RED than paying twice the US price through some Australian distributor (in the last two years, the Australian dollar has gone from 0.60 US cents to now being at parity with the US$ but it seems that a lot of importers/distributors are just taking a bigger profit instead of making things cheaper).

Also, that's a great thing about Scarlet delays - if it had been released a year ago, it would have cost me far more because of the currency difference!

Love Arri, and the Alexa is a great camera, but i promise you the Alexa didn't slow us down one bit :) The only difference is they ended up shipping a non-complete beta camera and we didn't.

Not to be disrespectful, but you did once with the R1 :001_smile:

And shipping Epic with 95% enabled features, firmware updates to come and modules being available later probably means you'll do it a second time. But that's not the point.
You were almost done when you thought of some clever new stuff (HDR amongst others) and felt you NEEDED to put it in there instead of in the next generation camera.
Even though with your modular approach that would save us from buying a whole new system (just a new brain), your choice to make Epic as best as you possibly could shows your dedication to your product and loyalty to your customers and I salute you for it!

Congratulations on your big achievement!
