I have a client that really likes the look for the 5D (color, contrast etc...) is there anyone who has some settings to get me to that same look(ish)?

Before you answer this remember it's the CLIENT that likes the look, so I'm not looking for a debate on whats better than what, all I'm looking for are settings to get me in the realm of the 5D on the monitor for the client.. I understand the "look" of the 5D is not everyone's cup of tea.. Just curious if anyone has some magic settings..

Thanks guys and girls..

What picture style is he referring to?

Justin, I assume you're talking about the monitor path, since the RAW file will not match the Canon's burned in look... but yes, you can probably get things to look more 5d like on set. In the "Look" menu, you can alter how the image is displayed to monitor feeds. I'd suggest setting your Epic up next to the 5D2 and connect both to the same external monitor via HDMI. Put Canon glass on, then adjust the Contrast and Saturation of the Epic display (in that Look menu) until you get it closer to what the client may prefer. Keep in mind you'll later have to grade the Raws to match that.

Of course, you can create a preset look in RedCine X that will get you close to the esthetic.

The look menu info is on page 96 of the Ops Guide.

all the Canon DSLR's have curves built in that take caucasian skin tones and flatten them and make them more similar and globby (at least to my eye). If you do that in a curve in the video settings (on the RED at least) then you will approximate part of the "Canon" look. This is what I do in Color at least to get them to look more similar. Then add contrast (crushing some of the blacks) and shoot wide open if trying to match the DOF. Also, if you really want to make it look like someone shot it on a 5D then over half of your video must be blatantly out of focus.

And throw some moiré and wobble into the mix …

On a more serious note: the Picture Style Editor from Canon can help you a lot to understand how that camera's looks can be tweaked to learn what it does to the images.

FF vs S35 sensor size. As a result 5D has shallower depth of field, which can be the reason for Canon "look". No LUT can help with that...

yep, the compression is WAY different in the lenses alone. that's really more the look you're client is talking about. and the lack and resolution keeps skin really soft so sometimes it can be more aesthetically pleasing than a Epic capturing every single hideous pore of the person's face. But back on point, Jake's right, there's no magic formula to create a lut. the camera uses it's own gamma, and has way different processing. (and the lack there of) best thing for you to do is to shoot a 5d as sample shots for each shot you shoot your epic with, and time the epic footage to match the 5d. You'll get much closer results if you have a real reference.

Thanks alot guys for the answers.. I specifically told the client that the images will not be as "airbrushed looking" as the 5D, and he didn't care about that, he just loves the color.. I have the canon mount for the EPIC and will be putting those lenses to work.

Thanks again!
