Hello all,

I am currently working with a production shooting on an Epic and we would like to know the physical sensor size for the various resolutions.

According to the Tech Specs on the Red website, I gathered that at 5K (16x9) the Epic shoots in full sensor at a S35 equivalent. This means it should be around 14.90mm x 18.70mm. Correct?

At 2k (16x9), the equivalency is of a 16mm size (Super16mm ?), at a size of 12.52mm x 7.41mm. Is this correct?

Can someone confirm the in between resolution and sensor sizes? This must be as accurate as possible for our system to operate property with the RED footage.

- 5K (16x9), 5120px by 2700px = 24.90mm by 18.70mm
- 4K (16x9), 4096px by 2304px = ???
- 3K (16x9), 3072px by 1728px = ???
- 2K (16x9), 2048px by 1152px = 12.52mm by 7.41mm

Thanks in advance. I appreciate the help.

Its 27.65x14.58mm at 5k 16:9, the largest recordable area with a resolution of 5120px by 2700pixels .each pixel is 5.4 micron, i think you can calculate the rest.............

Thanks for the reply....

Sounds about right. However, what ultimately ends up being the live feed from the Epic?

The Red One had a 10% cropping factor on the sensor size. Do you know if the Epic does the same?

Sensor photosites are 5.4um (0.0054mm) square. You can use that in conjunction with your resolution to figure out the dimensions of the active sensor area.

5K full sensor is NOT 16:9, it is 1.89:1. The largest recordable 16:9 area on Epic is 4800x2700.

5120x2700 is 27.65mm x 14.58mm. As I said above, the largest 16:9 area is 4800x2700, so 4800 * 0.0054 = 25.92.
So 4800x2700 is 25.92mm x 14.58mm.

Rhetorical Questions: When can we see a manual online? I guess it will correspond to Epic-X shipping?

The Red One's live preview output has a lookaround area that ends up being about 1.1 times larger than the sensor size used to record the image. Does the Epic's live output have the same 1.1 scaling? (i.e. if 4800x2700 corresponds to a 25.92mm sensor width, the imaged width used for the live preview output would then be 25.92 mm * 1.1 = 28.51mm.)

Is this correct?
