Had a nice gig with Epic-x with Canon mount on a Helicopter. It was cold (-27celsius) but really beautiful. I must say it´s so much easier to film handheld material from helicopter with Epic, compared with RedOne.

Here´s some pictures & story from the gig: http://laplandmemories.blogspot.fi/2013/02/aerial-filming-in-27-celsius.html

I have never had problems with lcd in cold temperatures. I film mostly in winter and coldest with epic has been -37 celsius. Even the touch screen works just fine. Only problem is that you have to use your bare fingers to operate it. So outside helicopter in -27 you don´t want to undress your gloves.

I had problems with RedOne EVF but I think everyone has had. In cold temperatures. With that I use neopren sock with some heatpacks.

Hi Vesa

I never went handheld with the RED ONE from a helicopter, but I have to agree that flying the Epic really is a breeze. This picture is from last winter in the North of Norway for a TV series Called "Mission: North Norway" (Oppdrag Nord Norge)

As you can see I made a very cheap stabilizer rig from rubber straps bought at a petrol station. Same ones you use to attach skis to the top of your car.

It worked really well. This together with Warp Stabilizer in CS5.5 made it possible for us to afford 2 months of helicopter use. We were contemlating a gyro rig, but due to the length of our shoot it turned out way to expensive.

I filmed everything from skiing in the mountains, BASE jumping to kiting at the ocean with this rig. For the money, you cant beat it ;-)

It is cold up there though, but I never had any problems with the LCD. What did happen was that the front of our RED ZOOM blew off as some of the screws loosened after a few weeks of flying. I think it was from the vibrations when flying fast and not filming, but still having the Epic outside of the helicopter

This is from a week ago, shooting in -19'C.
The EVF would ghost in the cold, making it very hard to tell what was in focus. Next week when we do this again, I'll use the 5" LCD and will post results.

My friend & coworker (behind me in the pic) using the Stedicam and FS700 got some great shots as well, and due to the focus peaking, was a lot more consistant in his shots.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I´ve only used the LCD when flying. Never had a problem with that. Guess air temprature has been between -5C to -15C. I wish I had brought clear glass for my goggles, as that would have made it a bit easier to judge the LCD image.
I´m going back up on Wednsday to film some skiing, but hopefully it wont be colder than around -10C. I recommend my "hangup" if you have a way of attaching the straps. It gives you more flexibility in hte air. And you won´t get tierd from holding the camera

I really like this idea Joachim, going to keep this in mind for the future. Do you have any links to footage shot from the set up?

Thanks for sharing.

I havent done any major projects with my Scarlet yet but its safe to say that this baby deals with -40 wc for at least an hour a few times :)

Now the operator didnt fare so well :P

I didnt bother with any blackshading yet since I havent had any issues with the frames.

Shooting at 24@4K and 120@1K mostly.

With Red One I used that kind of setup. Now I´m sitting outside the Helicopter so there is no good place to mount the rubberbands and I´m much more free when holding Epic in my hand or next to my leg. I have thought about using Easyrig (Swedish innovation for handheld shooting)

Hi
i have an Easy Rig, but never used it a helicopter as I often go out on ski is myself for shooting during a day.

Unfortunatly I don't have any links to the footage as the premiere of the TV series is in march. There might be some clips on the Facebook page. I'll check tomorrow.

Joachim are you using Red volts to power? If so, how much time are you getting out of one at those temps?
Here is some aerial Epic footage & FS700 we shot last year.

Thanks so much!

Hi
im on a very slow connection so I have to watch it later.
I use v-mount batteries and the belt clip and just attach the battery under the seat.
Redvolts last too short to have any use IMHO, at least in the cold

I have pair of those thin ones, but they are not helping much in windy -27 :)
Maybe I should cut the fingertips and glue them to my warmer gloves

You should get yourself one of those conductive gloves and/or a conductive stylus.

Your hands owe me a beer or rather a hot chocolate.
