  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic noisy at 2K

Just to redress the balance so that I'm not simply moaning about the slomo / compression.... This stuff was shot at 13:1 and looks as crisp as I could ever need. :)

The Epic I used about 2 weeks ago it is very noisy in 2K as well, and the RPP 300mm has a lot chromatic aberration! Combine the two together, and that is what I did, and the footage is very degraded.

Shooting at 300 fps make it worse, but even at 24 fps at 2K and the 300mm RPP is awful!

I don't know how to post R3D stills, but here are some pics.

The other footage shot at 4K HD and even at 120fps looks great!

Hi Pablo,

To me the pictures look like the 2K mode on the RED One MX, although the compression artefacts seem a bit more worse.
Anyway, you don't reach really full HD resolution through the debayering process and maybe the RPP 300 mm isn't really capable too. Have you tried something like a Master Prime in the 2K mode?
What makes it worse if you go to 300fps is maybe that you have to open up the aperture, but lenses usally perform best if closed down a few stops.

Best regards,
Gerhard

Thankd Gerhard,

I used 2K on the RED MX I think only once, but from what I remembre it wasnt that noisy. The images here are not graded, if you add a little contrast it looks worse, and if you look at them in motion, the compression artifacts and the noise becomes quite apparent. I think it's some kind of bug, I found out that even at 4K, one shot has a lot of compression artifacts, I'm on the phone right know, but I will post that image this evening.

All I had this shoot was Ultra Primes and the 100mm and 300mm RPP, but oddly enough I did not test the Ultra Primes with 2K footage. I did use the 300mm at 4K, and it does look softer, and has a little Chromatic aberration, but not as bad as in 2K.

Aren't a lot of people starting to shoot 299fps because you can use a lower compression ratio? And some are getting spectacular results so there must be many more factors at play.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? My epic is extremely noisy at 2K. It is beyond unusable. Just a snowstorm.

I have tried lodging an enquiry with red about a weak ago, very little response from the tech department.:furious3:

Has anyone else had/ solved this problem?

We had the same thing happen but we were shooting at 2K 300FPS in shit lighting. I mean we just tried testing it out for the first time just to get a sense of it, but it was noisy.

I agree the 2k 300fps mode is not quite there, we all know this...and know that RED is working to tweak the compression. I cant quite use this mode as its noisy for me as well, let me know when its ready for prime time. Strange i have seen results that are tack clean. So its either a camera thing or its possible.

I posted this link a while back but I found 300fps at 2K to be the perfect tool for this particular job, the R3D's looked amazing, and even compressed from prores you get the idea.
There is an 120fps 4KHD shot in there somewhere and that really sings out.
The client was convinced this was a Phantom job. I am so glad I didn't have to lug that up this mountain!

I did some on the fly tests with my daughter the day I got my Epic.
300 fps of her swinging her hair around. I went with the highest compression the camera allowed (7:1?)
I was surprised at the amount of noise.
I have attached a JPEG, not that it's a valid way to evaluate...
I'm sure it will get better as the Red Team tweaks.
Cheers,
Harry

Something great that I notice after read a thread talking about this issue and that I tried on SET and worked great.
Put the FPS @ 299 and you can set the compression 6:1... a huge help.
The noise is still there but nothing comparable @300fps.
A little trick that helped me in that Hispeed Ad.
Hope that helps you too.
Cheers

I did a test at 96fps 1/8000 ISO1600. It was dark as hell and noisy, but if you color it right then the noise goes away.

I did a 300fps shot last night with my Epic X and got aweful noise. Much noisier than the monitor image and borderline unuseable. It was under Tungsten light so I thought that would be the culprit. I did a test today in daylight same results. Yet I see clean looking footage online. Tried installing Firmware 1.6.44, Beta Firmware 1.7.9 and did black shading at 24 fps as well as 300 fps, tried 288@ 6:1 etc... The noise has improved slightly in the process, going from compression artifact/ugly to film grain-ish noisy but it seems too much, especially when compared to the monitor image. Any advice? What am I doing wrong? I'll be happy to send in footage/logs.

Or do I just need to lower my expectations? Everything other than 2K/300fps looks stellar...

Edit: I was able to improve the results a slight bit more as my Red decode settings were accidentaly set to half res good instead of full res premium in Resolve. Plus I guess you have to be prepared lighting wise to crush the blacks and ped down the mids...

Hey Florian. In my investigations into this, I've found that lifting the relevant part of the image AWAY from the noise floor of the sensor gives the compression a better chance. I'd hazard a guess looking at your stills that you shot ISO 800 and had a histogram that wasn't packed full to the ceiling. If you dial it back to ISO 320 in RCX you'll see what the sensor was really seeing, and hence what the Redcode was working on, and I bet its all a little dark. I may be entirely wrong in my guess, but I'd lay good odds that the same shot exposed with a nice full histogram at ISO320 (and with old M-sensor like care around over-exposure) would yield a cleaner end result.
