Just wondering what would a full cinema rig on the epic would consist of. What could be re-usable from the R1 and what would we need to purchase.

My guess would be:

Epic S35 brain
Redmote
Redvolt batteries
Monitor or bomb evf or both
Proxy Module
Breakout box
Red handle
Cf module

and of course the mattbox, follow focus and the lens

Is there a harddrive cradle for epic or do the drives come in a modular form as well?

It appears that the SSD modules will slot into a camera module similar to CF. No more big clunky hard drives!

mmm SSD. any ideas on the pricing and storage capacity for those?

Was at red day vegas and was such an awesome show. Everyone on here was super nice from Jim himself to deanen and everyone eles. Had interesting conversation with light guy (sorry forgot name but thing was brent). Anyways i feel in love the gunner and was wondering does anyone have a clue when this will be realesed and for what price. There was many options for it but just any info on it would be great as really interested in purchasing that as soon as can.

wow red day must have been awesome. would have loved to be there! i saw some pictures of the gunner on the web, looks like its gonna get really popular! hoped there was more information on the modules and the different rigs though! i've got no clue either. what other setups did you manage to see?

... and how long it will be?

I'm curious on how the bridgeplate will work, if you can use the previous one or if there will be a newly designed one that fits better? They might make some top attachments to be able to use the top rods/cheeseplate again. After I got used to that I really liked that part of the design of the R1.

I'm not sure if the Proxy module is really all that useful, they are only offering it because Arri said their pro-res recording could be used for that.

Please forgive the level of speculation here, but I haven't heard too many details. I had the opportunity to ask Jannard about this.

There will be two module options, one for a 1.8 " drive (like an ipod drive), one for 2.5 " drive (laptop size drive). Jim said these will be like the CF cards, in that third parties options may be possible but certainly less reliable than the Red branded versions. No pricing announced, but you can research the cost of the best fastest of these media, and imagine the additional cost of a Red manufactured housing and firmware. Capacities seem to run from 64 Gb to 256 Gb.

Hopefully the price point will be significantly improved from the Red Ram, which is $4500 for a 128 Gb SSD drive. Pricing for these drives is happily following Moore's formula. Since this is to be the backbone of Epic storage, I'm hoping these units will be in the hundreds, not thousands, of dollars.

Anyone from Red care to comment?

I would like to know more about the SSD options for Epic, as well as the CF card options. I need to start planning now. Can we get any concrete info on what framerates will work with what CF cards, SSDs, etc?

im just interested to know how the proxy module can change the workflow for the better. It seems like it can eliminate the need for a separate low res recording device (eg. HDV 'hamburgers' ) for continuity purposes or whatnot.

Thats great news James! I always thought the Red Drives were abit bulky sometimes and we never shot more than 100gb of space on one mag. SSD is the way to go but i think harddrives will have to do for now until the price of SSD eventually drops.

If i'm not wrong I've heard some news about 64gb cards from RED, any word on those?

i have no idea. i've never seen the epic with my own eyes but i'm guessing with a full cine-rig like that it'll probably be just as big as the R1 but like a KICK-ASS version!

can new codecs be added to the proxy module or do you have to buy a new proxy module for each codec. the former would be very useful specially if it was firmware upgradable with new codecs. even if you needed to purchase the codec license

The proxie module is mostly for WIRELESS HD VIDEO ON SET. Since it's taking the time to convert the video signal into h.264 for streaming, they figured we might as well record it too. Give people some dailies right off the bat. But the true power is that, with the right "RED air grabber app' every computer, iphone, ipad with a wifi signal in range is a monitor.

I'm only pissed that RED got to it before I could.
