Hi all,

has anyone else come across this situation (with Epic):

I have two SSD mags, and I format both at the beginning of a shoot.

The first I set to Reel 1, Cam A, which formats to A001_C001 as the first clip to be recorded.

I eject A001 and put the second SSD mag into the camera. I set it to Reel 2, Cam A, and it formats to A002_C001. All good so far.

I record a clip to the second mag. Eject to back up, inserting A001 to continue recording.

Press record and shoot my clip. Here's where the problem occurs.

The clip names itself as A002_C001, even though the reel and mag is set to A001.

This continues as I switch mags, so that I end up with two RDM folders, one named A001 and the other A002, except that all the clips in A001 mag actually have the A002 file name at the beginning.

Luckily the two random characters at the end of each clip name mean there's little to no chance of actual duplicates, but it's extremely confusing for post production when you have two sets of A002_C00X clips to deal with.

Is there something in my formatting procedure i need to be doing differently, or is this a bug? Was present with build 1.7.9a and now with 2.0.2 as well.

Thanks in advance,

Paul :)

Paul I have had similar experience on the latest build as well. Lately I have been formatting the cards as I need them which works well. Pre formatting before a shoot has been problematic as it has for you.

We were always advised by RED to format the card in the camera. That way, the camera increments the magnumber correctly, and you always can be sure, that the filesystem is exactly the way the camera wants it. It avoids problems that you describe.

Why are you not formatting the mags each time you insert it into the camera?

There's a note in the release notes saying that the camera is now in charge of reel numbering, not the card... perhaps this is what you're running in to?

Hi all,

thanks for the replies.

I'm only formatting the cards in camera. Never on my PC.

I WANT the camera to control the card and clip numbering. It's just that it's not recognising when card A001 is re-inserted, but it DOES appear to recognise the next clip number to be written. I guess it is a bug after all then. Will file a ticket with Red.

Thanks all!

Cheers from Japan,

Paul :)

Sorry Paul,

I now understood more what you meant.

Same here - if you format in camera, the camera does not automatically increment the magnumber.

What build are you on?
I am now on the 2.02 alpha.

Thanks!

Jonas

2.0.2 here also.

The camera increments the magazine number when formatting for me, but if you swap magazines it keeps the last formatted magazine number in the clip name, instead of the current magazine number.

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Epic build 1.7.10 Media Reel number changing by itself!

Epic build 1.7.10 Media Reel number changing by itself!

Hi Paul - did you get a resolution or answer to your issue?

I just came across this bug on a rented Epic-M firmware 1.7.10

This behaviour is different to previous firmware 1.6.42

On the shoot we're using two SSDs per day.

Eg Pre-format two SSDs as A100 and A101, then alternate them all day to download and backup footage to external drives - NO reformatting at all during the day.

The first recordings on SSD1 - A100 increment OK - eg I get A100_C001, C002, C003, C004, C005.
Swap to SSD2 - A101 increments OK - eg A101_C001, C002, C003, C004, C005, C006, C007.
Swap back to SSD1 - EXCEPT now media reel number is A101 as well!! So now further recordings on SSD1 are called A101_C006, C007, C008. This gives us almost duplicate clip names, but thankfully there are the two random characters and TOD timecode to sort them by.

But yes, this is confusing for the editors.

I think this bug relates to the Reel number in the Media SET menu, but I did not touch the SET menu at all for this to happen. AND this behaviour was not happening in previous build 1.6.42. Once pre-formatted, the SSD retained the Reel Number until reformatted. The bug seems to be that the SET menu is active even without us selecting it.

Edit: The RDM Reel name stays as formatted - it's just the RDC Reel names that change.

I just encountered a bug on 2 cameras...

more so on the B body.. but A camera did it once...

I set the reel to A001 format and as soon as its done formatting, it pops up as A002...

so basically If I want A003.. i need to set it to A002 in the camera..

it stopped doing this after about 4 reloads.. but yah.. WTF

Hey Zak!
What build?
Will you send me a log file when you get a chance?
Been awhile, hope you are well my friend.

Eric, Can you also forward me along a .log that is close in time to your reported experiences? sean at red dot com
Thank you

Log file sent Sean.

I've encountered a few similar issues... Only on one occasion (though it happened two or three times in a row), when trying to format a mag as A003, it came up as a different number after formatting (though I don't recall if it came back as A002 or A004).

The other issue I've run into is setting the reel number for an already formatted mag (for example, next mag was supposed to be A024, but accidentally formatted as A023, and rather than re-formatting to A024, we just use the "set" reel number function). The proper number reads on the camera display, and the clips are named as such, but the RDM folder stays as A023, even though all the contents begin with A024.

My only remaining gripe is that Epic has apparently lost the ability to keep a reel count as the R1 did so well. Instead, the automatic number that pops up in the reformat window is only one number greater than the current mag about to be reformatted. This would work great if we were only using one SSD mag at a time, but when using two or more, it can quickly be disorienting if shooting on your own (no 2nd AC or DIT/loader to keep you honest). I would LOVE the ability to reset the roll count at the beginning of a job and have the Epic keep that count.
