  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-M...

Before you think about placing an order for a machined EPIC-M, here are some things you need to know.

Some features are being disabled for stability on the EPIC-Ms until the production EPIC-Xs are released. Then a firmware upgrade will turn these features back on.

1. Audio
2. Playback
3. eHDR™™™ (HDRx™™™ will be enabled and is the professional solution)
4. Various lower resolutions... but all 5K options will be enabled.

Again, we will turn these options back on when the production cameras ship (or sooner).

Jim

:-)

... as in "enough to shoot a movie" ...

... playback and transfer via RED station SSD module, i guess ... right?

For the fortunate few who get these, PLEASE be generous with your postings. Allow the rest of us to live vicariously through you by posting pics of your set ups, samples of your footage, and your impressions of working with such a ground breaking tool.

Oh most definitely ... If I'm lucky enough I'd definitely do this ... and I'd like to think that any of us that actually are selected won't be able to help but flood with pics, footage and impressions ... we'll be too excited!

Guys let's not stress about the name EPIC M. There will be limited numbers of them and i'm sure their owners will make it clear to every one that its machined. As far as most of us are concerned there is just EPIC S and EPIC X.

well, all fine but we have already december and i expected epic should be ready to deliver in stage 2 program. This maschine "new option" is for me a lit bit strange if the stage 2 is comming soon, or , i hope im wrong, stage 2 will come in few months. So it will be a year form official annonsment in may 2009.
I have already moved 3d production for march 2011 from september 2010 as i was sure epic will be ready, but that new program looks like a proof for rather oposit theory...

Personally i do not care if is hand made or not, is just a tool to shoot movies, i hope is a great tool and i give a lot of trust for that new epic and i know it will pay back. It will not shoot movies without delivery anyway:)

Best regards
MARTIN

Not sure yet... seeing how many parts we can gather up in a short time period. But no matter what, it won't delay production. They are two separate lines.

Jim

Since the SSDs require the RED1.8" SSD station, will you allocate one of these to be purchased for each EPIC-M as well?

The machined EPIC-Ms have all changes and modifications and are the same in every way to production cameras... except they are machined.

Being made individually by hand, I like to think of them as being "human'ed"...

You should sign them too. :thumbup1:

You can actually offload footage via the gigabit ethernet port on the back of the brain as well.

Zzzz.... Waiting. Transfer done yet? Really, is it done yet? I need to use the camera... Come on, wtf???

Seriously, buy the RED Station module.

Of course! I was just pointing out that it isn't REQUIRED to offload footage.

But yes, for that price you would be crazy not to purchase the RED Station.

Will the 3D functionality be operational? I need at least 2 of them.

Both in 2011.

Jim

Is the change in name for the S35 Scarlet more than that? What I mean is, originally you could buy the Scarlet and upgrade/downgrade the sensors, but not the brain (i.e., you couldn't buy a Scarlet and upgrade it to become an Epic).

Will I be able to buy an Epic Lite and upgrade it later to a regular Epic?

Thanks.

P.S. I have yet to hear anything about 3rd party mounts. Will the Epic family have official RED mounts other than PL, Nikon, and Canon EF? Will Red allow 3rd party mounts that do not violate its warranty? For someone with a huge investment in glass, this is a crucial question.

Thanks again.

Maybe I am mis understanding you, but RED has never said you will be able to change sensors in a DSMC brain. The whole point of the DSMC system is that once you need different capabilities you swap out the brain.

Justin: I totally disagree. That is exactly what RED said you could do. I have been planning for almost two years now to buy the S35 Scarlet and upgrade to the Monstro Scarlet when that sensor became available.

I guarantee you that will not be possible. The electronics needed to drive the 6k resolution and 350fps are much different then what is in the S35 Epic.

I will try to find you a link where Jannard confirms this. He has quite a few times.

Don't bother looking, Justin. Its a semantic exercise. brain/sensor, whatever. I am not interested in the precise wording. I am interested in my original question:

Will I be able to buy an Epic Lite and upgrade it later to a regular Epic?

Because 2 years ago, you had to buy into one of the two systems, you could swap sensors/brains within the system, but you could not change a Scarlet into an Epic.

You cannot change sensors inside the brain. You can only change brains. That has been clear from the beginning. The only exception has been the RED ONE.

You can upgrade your camera by buying a new brain... if you want to sell your old brain I'd bet there is a pretty good market for it.

Stupid question here,

Does the Epic body have neck-strap mounting locations?

I've never seen anybody with one around their neck.

Might help Ted look more relaxed when hes demo-ing the camera.

An ounce of safety...

ps. Love PJ on the RED website cover. So great for the company and for RED-life in general.
