I'm not going to post this in the regular forum sections. It's not worth it just to get "subject to change" etc.

But what's the difference in Epic X and Epic M?

I saw a post in another forum recently, with what I though was not accurate information. Basically, the only difference is a HUGE price difference?

I though the prices would be relatively the same, but the availability would be better since X is coming off of a production line?

Any info on what the difference is between the two cameras?

From my understanding, the Epic-M is made of machined parts and hand-built. The Epic-X is cast and assembled in a manufacturing plant.

The price difference is precisely because Epic Ms are hand made and Epic Xs are built on a production line. They're pretty much the same camera, but one benefits from economies of scale - that's all.

So what are we talking about in price difference? 10%, 20%, 50%?

there are 2 physical differences between M and X, and they both deal with the top of the camera.

In addition, as has been said, M is machined, X is cast. Other than that and Jarred's mysterious two physical differences, there should be nothing to separate the two.

Present Prices
*"Full" Epic-M Package - $58,000
"Light" Epic-M Package - $43,000
*Epic-X Brain - $29,500 (subtract $500 for non-existant Al mount, add $2000 for Ti mount)
Epic-M Brain - N/A for purchase (but the math works out to $39,500 right now)

New Year Prices
*"Full" Epic-M Package - $58,000
*Epic-M Brain - $39,500
*Epic-X Brain - $36,500 (subtract $500 for non-existant Al mount, add $2000 for Ti mount)

So the difference works out to $3000 in the new year, therefore the M is 9.2% more expensive than the X.

EPIC-M has an additional year of warranty.

Right now, epic-m is only available as a package for $58,000.
In the new year it will be available brain only for $39,500.
Until then, I don't know if it will be offered brain only or at what price.

Now, an epic-x brain will set you back $28,000.
In the new year, the price will increase to $35,000.

So, apples to apples, both brain only, both in the new year: $39,500 for M and $35,000 for X.

That's a $4,500 difference.

Making the M 12.8% more expensive than the X.

Wow. That's quite an incentive to order now.

Not positive about cameras of this order, but with some credit cards, platinum Amex in particular; will double the warrantee. So the Epic -M, might have 3 and the X, 2 years. (up to one additional year) at no cost to Red or yourself. Just confirm with your card in advance. (http://www.mymoneyblog.com/american-express-extended-warranty-review.html)

Any input or experiences other than this? Anyone usd Amex for extended warrantee for a Red?

Also. Generally machined parts like the M have greater strength, have tighter tolerances and have less fracture issues. If you can afford it, machined is almost always better. IMHO.

I'm not sure they accept credit cards for that amount, but I could be wrong.. They would get an almost 1800$ transaction fee from the credit card companies on 58000 maybe a little less

Epic M is available in a package right now for $43000.

It includes a Titanium PL, which sells for $2000, and a DSMC Side SSD module, which sells for $1500.

So, an Epic M is effectively $39,500 this red hot second.

Now, an epic-x brain will set you back $28,000.
In the new year, the price will increase to $35,000.

Is this correct? I mean can any shmuck who never bought a Red anything before (like say ME) get the $28000 price on the Epic X this year?

I'm a light duty user and I tend to be gentle with gear, so I'd be happy with an X that's $11500 cheaper than the M.

If that isn't available to "just anyone" though, (or if I can't buy until next year) I'll probably get an M. At these price points the $4500 buys you a better build AND a better warranty ... that is not a question anymore for a system that will probably be "the camera" in my work for 4-5 years at least. With Dragon, quite possibly significantly longer.

I'm sorry...I need to update that based on the full information in Jim's post.

Present Prices
*"Full" Epic-M Package - $58,000
"Light" Epic-M Package - $43,000
*Epic-X Brain - $27,500
Epic-M Brain - N/A for purchase (but the math works out to $39,500 right now)

New Year Prices
*"Full" Epic-M Package - $58,000
*Epic-M Brain - $39,500
*Epic-X Brain - $34,500

So the difference works out to $5000, therefore the M is 14.49% more expensive than the X.

*These items are referenced in the "Significant Update" thread.

And yes...as far as I know, $27,500 is the Stage 4 (a.k.a. anybody off the street) price for Epic-X. Earlier stagers just get discounts off of that price.

This will all be much simpler when its all in the store!

And yes...for those looking to get an Epic-X, it seems the machined body and additional warranty comes at little additional cost, making Epic-M an attractive option.

What is the difference in weight between the two?

Mike Brennan

At present, the M weighs very close to 4.5 lbs. The Epic-X will be very close to 4 lbs even, thanks to some new R&D. (Some?) M's will be eligible for a free upgrade to the lighter weight component.

So, in the long run, there should be no significant difference.

New Year Prices
*"Full" Epic-M Package - $58,000
*Epic-M Brain - $39,500
*Epic-X Brain - $36,500 (subtract $500 for non-existant Al mount, add $2000 for Ti mount)

So the difference works out to $3000, therefore the M is 9.2% more expensive than the X.
Hi Michael,

You're doing a great job with these rather confusing numbers but I think there are a couple of discrepancies.

As far as I see it, the $39,500 price for the Epic-M brain is just that: the brain. With the $2,000 Titanium mount and the $1,500 side SSD module you get the $43,000 "Light" package as you have named it.

The same holds true for the Epic-X. The brain alone will be $34,500. You don't subtract $500 for the (nonexistent) Aluminum mount as that isn't included in the base brain price. (Read the added "disclaimer" at the bottom of that "significant update" page... I don't know why they haven't fixed the numbers at the top). With the Titanium mount it is indeed $36,500, but you didn't factor in the cost of the Titanium mount in the Epic-M price when you compared the two.

Therefore, the cost differential is actually $5,000 between the Epic-M and Epic-X. (These numbers are all the "new year" prices and don't take any special stages into account).

Hope that helps!

Häakon

Thank Häakon, I see what you are saying; keep mounts out of it. Updated!

Sorry for all the confusion...
