EPIC M UPGRADE PROGRAM- HAS ANYONE BEEN NOTIFIED

Ours has started its journey home via Red Europe. Dropped off this Monday, let's see how the time goes... :)

If anyone else with an M in the UK wants to do an exchange of 'cover' during the upgrades PM me.

I think that's the way to go if you are in europe John, sending M through RED Europe. I filled in all the paperwork RED sent me in the Epic M upgrade email and sent through DHL as requested. However it has been subjected to delays at every stage, both in the UK and USA. It's very frustrating.

Hello,

I am wondering; if the Epic-M costs more, does upgrading reduce the value of your Epic? I'm just curious because Red still sells the Epic-M on their website at a considerable premium.

Thank you and I apologize if this has already been asked.

Epic-M comes with a two year warranty. (if that doesn´t weight up for the proce difference, maybe someone else will fill me in)

machined instead of cast. Thats what the M stands for. Plus the 2 year warranty. These are a few reasons for the price increase as well as the M were released prior to the X so it was a premium to get it first...

But if the premium was for getting it first, shouldn't that be irrelevant now that both are available? Is the two-year warranty the only reason for the extra $5k now?

Sorry to be all dollars, but if our company decides to sell the Epic for some reason, I'm wondering if resale value is impacted by the upgrade. I would think the upgraded Epic would be worth more, but it seems strange to see the M cost so much more.

The fact that it was machined means it cost more to make, I assume, but does that also give it more inherent value that I will lose by upgrading?

Machined body panels and 2 year warranty. That's the only real difference now. There were some differences in the assembly process, but I'm not sure that applies now that all the M's are being converted to be like X cameras and moving forward, I would think they're being assembled on the same lines by the same people and processes. Of course, that's just an assumption, but since they're supposed to be the same.... You can add the additional RED Armor warranty to the EPIC-X for a cost to make it equivalent (or better), can also add additional warranty coverage to the M as well.

The machined body panels do cost quite a bit extra. Now that the EPIC-X is shipping on demand, I'm not sure if there really is a reason to buy the EPIC-M instead, unless you just want to have an "M".

It has a more solid build. Which rental houses like because it makes it more durable than a cast camera.

How are you losing anything by upgrading? All they are doing is updating the internals to be the same as the newer Epic X and making it lighter in doing so. They arent swapping you with an X body. You need to update it to maintain its value otherwise if selling you will get less money as it hasnt been upgraded to the newer specs. Does this make sense?

It wouldnt be worth any more because of the upgrade but would be worth less on the market if its not upgraded.

It does! That's exactly what I thought, but I just wasn't sure. It might seem paranoid, but with such expensive equipment, it can't hurt to be prudent.

Well I am happy to report the I received my email notification today... My epic was shipped to me in Late December... Has anyone gone through the process yet? How long did it actually take to have camera returned?

I sent my Epic-M in yesterday for the upgrade (thanks Red!).

Has anyone received their upgraded M back from Red yet? If so what was your turnaround? It would be great to know what the real-world duration of this work is so I can schedule my bookings accordingly.

Only Epic-M i know of is M8 but that was the 1st one Done by Red.

Update - We got a landslide of EPICs in for this over the past week or so. As a result, processing times are a little longer than we'd like. A few days longer than the 7-10 business days... So, we are dedicating some extra resources to knock this out...

Oh Man, not what I was hoping to hear, but understandable. Thanks for the update Brent!

I hand delivered my M on May 7 and still patiently waiting.

That's a real bummer. Thought the email notification system they put into place would be balanced with their production capacity to prevent gridlock. No way I can give up my cam for a month or so. Guess I'll have to wait until RED can guarantee a return date before sending in.

I hope you guys can manage to pull miracles. It's even longer with us overseas guys, having to ship to and from Europe - i have no clue when you guys got mine there in Irvine and when i can start the countdown to its return - it will be needed in June for a feature so im a little bit worried now.

I got mine back and couldn't be happier. It's like getting a brand new camera. Actually, some parts were brand new :-) They even tightened up the swivel on my touchscreen LCD. Thanks RED!
