  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic M shutdown issues - amber lights

Hi there,

Recently, I've encountered an issue with my Epic where it sometimes when sitting idle, will shut down the screen and flash both the record and power LEDs flash yellow/amber.

Tried swapping between my Red Pro 5.0 and Bomb EVF and also tried swapping the LCD cable.

The camera is still on, and fan is running but the screen gets shutdown. This doesn't seem to occur when the camera is recording.

I'm using mostly VMount batteries (I have both ID Endura, and Red VMounts and this symptom happens on both.)
Also happens when plugged into AC supply.

Appreciate the insight anyone might have!
 
Hey Phadin,

Maybe check if your camera is on the latest firmware. If not, I would recommend to update it.

If you have a side handle on it, take it off during the update, as sometimes during updates your side handle wont be recognized after the update. I've gone through this twice now and thought maybe it might help you here. as a side note.

If the problem continues, try contact the red tech guys ~ they are awesome and answer withing half a day depending on your timezone.

Hey Patrick,

I'm on 6.3.106 which looks like the latest and greatest that is publicly posted - it is a Mysterium-X sensor. The side handle is a good mention -- I might actually try running without it attached -- I hadn't tried that yet in my troubleshooting.

Well friends -- it seems I should have pulled the side handle all a long... I've left my camera idling on a tripod for the last hour without the side handle and its been rock solid. Just re-installed and it shutdown with amber flashing LEDs for both REC and Power -- I'd still like to know what this indicates -- I don't see anything in the manual about both the REC and Power LEDs flashing simultaneously amber as far as any error code.

Either way its looking like the side handle may be the culprit. I'll have to borrow one from a friend to see if its my side handle or camera itself that is acting up. All the pogo pins look to be in good shape and the contacts are clean on the camera head. :confused1:
 
I might be wrong, but it could be a sign of your camera trying to update the SH. Did you leave it flashing for some time? Cheers, Ulf
 
Try cleaning the contacts of the side handle and the brain. The side handle does have power pins, might be some kind of a short circuit going on there.

Also, did you check your power saving options?

Yes, if that was the problem, then it might be time to get another handle. It is best to check, anyway, with another handle to eliminate the problem.

As Alex mentioned, you can clean the contacts with some contact cleaner (pure alcohol) to see if there was an issue there. Be careful and make sure things don't get wet/soaked. Then try and reattach and see.
Problem persists, then it might be brain or module. Check with another side handle and eliminate.

As Ulf mentioned: that could be some bug going on there where the brain is trying to update the handle and then getting frozen in that process. Maybe just try and do a downgrade and then upgrade again to see if that fixed the issue(s). This will take you the best part of the day to sort this out. I have personally never heard of this kind of issue, but there can be many bugs or freezes that can happen!

From my own experience with both my Epic and Scarlet, the Side Handle issue is a classic issue known. I downgraded my scarlet with the side handle on. Then during the upgrade to the latest firmware, I had removed the side handle so it wouldnt update the handle. As my handle appeared "dead" or not connecting to the brains. That is a confirmed experience from me on 2 different bodies with 2 different handles. I also wrote with the RED Tech Team about it and they mentioned that they have heard about such things, but recommend the upgrading with the handle on. However, they were not against my method of troubleshooting this issue, just they might recommend otherwise. Which is totally right on their behalves.

If it works, it works.

Keep us updated, mate. It is always good to know if the issue is solved and documented for others in the future who might have the same or similar problem.

If you know anyone else with an older RED DSMC1 then ask if they can flash your SH.
Never had issues doing that...crossing fingers :)

Read the rest of the thread and repeat. If that doesn't work for you, then come back and walk us through when it started and what you did before this started to happen to eliminate the steps. More info needed.
 
Sorry it took so long folks,

I was finally able to borrow a side handle. My Epic has been rock solid since I stopped using my own side handle... I've been using the touch controls on my Pro 5.0 LCD without issues for the past few shoots. My buddy's side handle also seems to be working fine -- if reaching for the touch controls starts to annoy me enough, I may end up just picking up another side handle... I find myself missing the handy shortcut function keys mostly.

I'm a little leery to back rev my camera from 6.3.1, because its operating fine, and I don't want to jeopardize my production work when I have a functional camera right now, but as Patrick mentioned it seems downgrading -- letting the side handle also downgrade, and then re-upgrading seems to do the trick in some cases -- in my case I'm more leaning towards a hardware issue with the side handle itself.

Glad to hear it has been a success, Phadin! Get yourself a new-ish handle and hope that that doesn't play up. You can sell your existing handle with the notification of it's potential issue and someone might buy it to use or use for parts. Eitherway, you will get a good trade off.

I'm pretty sure your camera is in power save mode. It’s not a problem you just have to adjust your settings.
