Our Epic-M and our amazing R3D Guru David just returned from 2 weeks in Hallo Bay, Alaska shooting Grizzly and Brown Bears for a National Geographic series with incredible DP Mark Emery. Here are a few of his behind the scenes shots from the adventure.

The Epic never missed a beat and came back with some incredible footage at various frame rates from 24fps to 300fps.

They walked 10 miles a day, David with an Epic-M and Optimo 24-290 strapped to his back....now back to processing 3.89TB of 5K footage.

Wow that's awesome!!
Wouldn't he prefer 1lb 18-200 Nikkor for this job?

Does the 24-290 vignette up to 50mm or so at 5K Greg? I know the 17-80 does... I had to switch to 4K to shoot with the Optimo.

Also, I see they have a Bomb and 5" LCD, on at the same time, how are you using both at the same time?

Yes Norm it does...they have a solution in the works:
1- Adding a 1.17x adapter in the back of the lens. That adapter will replace the PL mount. You’ll keep the focus, zoom and iris rings of the 24-290. Your focus marks will be off a little bit by around 10mm (1/3 inch). It will cost around 4k$ for the adapter (price to be confirmed).
2- Sending the lens back to France where they can put the 1.17x adapter in the back and replace the zoom, iris and focus rings. The lens will have 28-335mm zoom ring and a T:3.2 full open for the iris. It will cost around 10k$ for that upgrade (price to be confirmed)

These options will be available in Oct – Nov 2011.

Neither sounds all that appealing, shooting 4K is the better option.

that bear spray is serious stuff... just sucks when you have to ship it around else buy it every time (cause you can't check it through the airport)

This just makes me want to move to Alaska all the more... Beautiful country up there!

Amazing pics, big animal lover and hope this represents a trend of wildlife and animal programs shot on Red Epic. I know Gibby has done a lot with his Red1, but Epic is obviously an even better fit for this type of shooting -- anyway, thanks for posting and can't wait to see it! :)

You're kidding, how far were you from the Bears? Was there anything blocking them from charging you?

several times within feet...but in most cases the 290mm lens and 2X afforded a safe distance.

WoW Grey! that's awesome, enjoy your shooting & take good care!

Beautiful stuff. What Nat Geo series show should I look for? I really want to see the final product.

Alaska is absolutly amazing. I go there every Summer. I was just up in Alaska a few weeks ago shooting with a 5D with long lenses. I got some nice shots of grizzlies as well but certainly not like those from your Epic + Optimo. I'll be bringing an Epic with me next year.
