No worries Dr. Jarred,
As soon as it's ready I'll send one for your checkup. Before I sell any....:thumbup1:

We havnt seen it yet... i would be careful....

What are the rules on other mounts for Epic?

I thought Epic was made to be easy to change mounts and has a more robust electrical interface so other mounts were no problem.

I have 22 Nikon mounts left over from some Nikon Aqualens Nikonos parts that I would like to turn into Epic dumb mounts. From what I have seen it seems like it would be really easy.

I have full faith that Sr. Jacek will come through with another certified Optitek mount yet again. Should have mentioned that it's on ORDER.....not in my cold, hard hands......expect in 2 or so weeks????

sorry i assumed since Johnny is renting cameras with it that kinda counts... I would really hate to see deja vu with this mount thing all over again.

it should be easy and completely harmless.. i just dont want to make any assumptions till we see it... we have all made that mistake before :)

Jarred,
should also qualify....renting the camera comes with me or one of my operators....never out on its own. I don't usually let others put my RED or in this case Epic in a water protective housing and dunk it in the water......there's about a hundred things that could go wrong and usually operator error. As a friend once told me.....he keeps making his products more and more dummy proof, but the dummies keep outpacing his R&D.......so i'm the test dummy when comes to dunking my cameras in water casings. And also taking full responsibility of anything i hack onto my epic. In this case the opti-tek mount that I'll leave to Jacek to get certified and if not....i'll take full responsibility if i weld it onto the epic.

Hey Johnny. Congrats on getting your Epic-M. Really hoping that I will get an email soon for my Epic-M or Epic-X, which ever comes first. Looking forward to shooting some 5K 120 fps action underwater. Cheers, Russ.

Hey Mate,
I've got most of the Epic package with the exception of Redmote and batts....only a few missing pieces. I also expect Gates to have a housing in the works soon. I've seen the drawings and as usual very impressive and we'll have full control of all camera functions albeit changing lenses underwater.
You had asked about re-purposing your RED housing and cost associated.....I have doubts Gates will take that on since the work to do that seems senseless based on what they have to do. Not to mention the Redmote that needs to be integrated. I also think we'll be pleasantly surprised at costs associated with the Deep Epic. Although i have no hard information, i do know that Deep Red sucked up a lot of time and investment and MUCH of that can be sent down the line to Deep Epic. So i'm kind of confident (fingers crossed) that we'll see a price point on Deep Epic that will be quite a surprise and make the choice of this full functioned housing a no brainer. Not to mention that all of your ports, port extenders handles, trim weights, LCD housing etc....are all transferable to the Deep Epic.
That said......upgrading your RED to MX and SSD and keeping Deep Red makes for another valuable and first rate tool for just about any job. At the moment i've got both MX with SSD and Deep Red and have plans to have my Epic M in a Deep Epic housing and two X's for topside and other uses. Basically two u/w cams two topside cams.
I think we'll here some announcement soon from Gates. That said, i also here SL Cine (father of Hector) at Element Technica has a RED housing that adapts or can adapt to Epic.....I know they do fine work....after re-purposing my Aquavideo housing. Joe is an old-school craftsman---CNC machine be damned!

Had to post this work of art. Jacek does a beautiful Job on the Nikon mount. I've had mine about two or more years and it's easy to mount and has a positive locking system that locks the nikon mount in place by a friction grip. I've had my 80-200 and 80-400 on with no support no need for support.

PIC here....note, this is NOT my Camera....i expect a mount as soon as Jacek has it ready and given thumbs up from RED.

That looks great Johnny. Do you shoot with the 14-24 at all?

Hi Mike,
I have the 14-24 in my arsenal, but don't shoot with it underwater. I have a range of other lenses l like best. Most notably my NEW favorite for big stuff or getting the wide shot is the Tokina 10-17 fisheye with dome port. TACK SHARP......this was a recomendation from Howard Hall---i take no credit for discovering that lens NOR would i have thought to use it. Howard had been shooting it and recommended it to me and after many months of it sitting in my bag i finally used it. It's now fused to one of my U/W RED's

Johnny,

Congrats mate! Long time no speak, looks like everything is going well for you. I got my hands full with my 4 month old baby, been out of the water for even longer than that, but slowly getting back into ship shape. Consulted recently on a couple of 3D RED MX projects shot in the film tank in Malta, very nice stuff, a test for a major Hollywood production, and it came out gorgeous. Mostly on the Tokina 10-17, which I've used on my still cameras ever since it came out, but mostly on the nikon 14-24 since it was easier to match lens to lens than the Tokinas. Shoot me a line, let me know what your schedule looks like, I got a couple of nice projects coming my way that I may need to pass on, and you might be interested. Lots of freediving involved, but shallow enough that it should be no problem for you. Let's talk.

Congrats on the Epic again!

Hey Rudi, yes....long time. I know you have your hands full. You need me over your way....just let me know. Count on it! Glad to know you are head deep in 3d. I'm off to Arctic for 6 weeks on a shoot all in 3d for a soon to be launched 3d station for one of the BIG's. I'll certainly report back in September or October.
....yes, i can hold my breathe for longer than 20secs and less than 4mins.....and chew gum and pull trigger on camera ALL at same time.

.....look forward to talk to ya Rudi
