  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC + Leica-M + Pier 59

Blame Leica on the extended elements towards the sensor... :-)

We are working on it.

Done - never liked the bastards! Now . . . can a internal Epic rework be done with firmware to go with on the next gen or is that an over simplification? It's the wides I want - which seem to be where the problem resides.

Remember.. anything wider than a 35mm Leica-M is going to be optically not so great when paired to the EPIC.. The Ray angles are so extreme they just do not work with sensors who's micro mirrors were designed for tele centric or quasi-telecentric lenses.

Well even a 35mm Leica M and above would be worth having on Epic or Scaret

Got a chance to test the noctilux here in Singapore. so only the wider lens are affected by this unfortunate issue?

I have now tested and sold 5 NOCTILUX .95 lenses, of course I do have a brand new one for my self waiting right here, as I will be personally using this MAGICAL lens in some night Fashion shoots in our Movie here in Rome... ;)

What I have done were the usual tests I do with all the DSLR glass, by 3 or more and test them to get the best one... With Canon has always been the best out of 3, or some times 5, however, even so not surprised at all, I was very please, since i have the Leica Summilux Cine Primes coming, that also the M Still lenses share an incredible quality control, intact all 5 Noctilux tested were exactly the same, an that is impressive for a Still lens.

By far however I do love the .95 for hits ridiculous extreme SDOF and even illumination, and when I say illumination I do mean it, as it is a lens with a head light inside, when shot wide open at night with no additional lighting just lights up your subjects like a christmas tree.

If I was to chose which lenses to use of the M series on Epic or Scarlet, after all the testing they would be:

21mm 1.4 Summilux (if RED can do some magic to allow for the wider)
35mm 1.4 Summilux
50mm 1.4 Summilux (This been the absolute Sharpest of them all)
75mm 2.0 Apo Summicron
90mm 2.0 Apo Summicron (this been the absolute BEST Still lens ever made)

Also after holding in your hand this lens, even so ever petit, they fill your hand like a sold piece of metal, as this have no plastic elements like the Canons do, so their fill is very different.

Even so we'll be sussing all kind of different glass on our Epic cameras for our Movie, and we are already testing our casting with it, I believe that the Noctilux will sure hold some of the best scenes in the film, can't wait!!

as the new owner of one of those Ketch tested .95 Nocs . . . would sure love to have a mount to go with

He he, thank for the trust and the purchase Josh... Don't worry, Jarred knows how many we need, so I'm sure that this time they'll make sure to have in off for every one, and the waiting list on people looking for continue to Grow... ;)

Also now that I have sold the M9, I have nothing to shoot it with, so we are all waiting eagerly my friend... ;)

Hey Jim,
I'm sure you know Leica has some really great glass in the fast/wide angle territory. I already have the 35mm Summilux Series 2. I would be in heaven to be able to use it on my Scarlet. It actually took 6 months to order at my local camera shop.
Cheers,
Sam

Below, you will find the link to a piece shot entirely with the EPIC, RED Leica Mount, and a Leica Noctilux 0.95 lens.

The video was shot by Dan Martensen, represented by MAP, Inc. Creative Chaos was production. Mark Anton Read under 59 Still + Motion did color grading, and H&M worked with an agency in Stockholm to deliver video. 59 Still + Motion, under the direction of Alan Balian lead with Technical Production and Camera Support.

Notice that the video is default at 360p but please watch it at least 720p. There's also a 3d version on the youtube link.

Guys, ther is new Leica R-Adapter M enables almost all Leica R-Lenses ever built to be mounted on Epic with Leica M mount on.

That means if you can't get wider than 50mm with M glass on Epic you could continue with a vintage Leica R glass.

Read more about the new Leica M to R adapter here below

http://us.leica-camera.com/photography/m_system/accessories/adapters/9305.html

Than you can found out that whole Leica R set is really one of the nicest DSLR glass ever designed and build.

That's keep you in having your desired Leica Look through the wide focal range from 15mm to 800mm and in between maybe if you have you can swap some of extraordinary M lenses...

Btw. I do have very rare old non electronic Leica M to R adapter from Leitz/Leica.

Really Why should we use lenses which flange distances are designed to accommodate Mirrors and Beam splitters. Red camera is actually a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirrorless_interchangeable-lens_camera .
With this constraint removed, smaller and better lens can give equal or better results.

RED please remove that flange limit, that the sensor box is limiting the selection of lens which need close flange distance. i.e.. short leica M lens.

RED , chance for you to redesign the RED lens to take advantage of this.

Hey guys,

sorry for making this thread bump up, but i'm really interested in knowing a bit more about using M lenses on Red cameras.
I have a sony a7s at the moment and I use my 21mm and 50mm voigtlander lenses all the time,
I absolutely love them.
If I had the chance to get this to work on a red body that would be heaven on earth.

I was looking at the Raven as it was a great option for me to enter the red world but since the mount is
not interchangeable I would like to know a bit more about the Scalet-W and a possible M mount on it.

Would it be possible ?
If yes are the widest lens still 50mm ? I'm looking after an anamorphic adapter anyway, so if 35mm lens can be taken on
the mount I could get a wide enough FOV anyway .

I really love the image look I'm getting from my 50mm voigtlander:

Thanks for the help :)

Interesting fact then. It still says 50mm on the store.. Will definitely dig into that
