  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC is a Dream to Configure!

Absolutely Robert - something like the Super Grip will really enhance run and gun with Epic - and in the process whoever makes such a unit will sell thousands of them to the largest market of the overall motion media production industry - namely the mobile EFP industry.

The Epic camera setups for me and my crews will be lean, lightweight, and efficient - usually the body, either the Bomb or LCD as needed, side grip and bottom grip, both with Red Volt batteries, a lightweight 35mm still zoom, screw-on filters, a small backpack with an extra lens or two, extra batteries and SSD, a Cine Saddle or lightweight tripod, a short shotgun on the camera, and a small dual wireless system to quickly mount/de-mount as needed for interviews and talent. That's it! That camera setup will have a total weight of under 15 pounds - a truly mobile run and gun rig. We'll shoot 5k for beauty montages, 4k when it makes the most sense, and even 3k for long-form programming situations where the delivery distribution model justifies it.

Ketch shoots mostly cine style, so his setups with Epic M8 will reflect his needs - and that's the beauty of this small, modular camera. Set it up for your shooting style that day, and go for it! But I have two more Stage 2 Epic X cameras coming which Ketch is not partnered with me on. Those will always be setup and shot in mobile EFP style with 35mm still zooms by me and my crews - because that fits our needs.

What do you mean by a SuperGrip?

You are not referring to this

I started a thread about it HERE

RED had talked about and had posted a render of a product they called Supergrip that fell off the radar some time ago.

In thinking about EPIC in HH config I think this might be a perfect match to work with Canon, Nikon and, when available, RED Electronic lenses.

A handle mount remote FIZ, start/stop, and some RED special features (no doubt), it seems like logical accessory for RED to make available to use not only with EPIC, but more importantly Scarlet.

And for the ultimate in elegant engineering solutions, make it REDmote compatible, complete with user programmable buttons, custom FIZ speeds. I see incredible utility and powerful control of the camera this way!

Are we still at the point where people don't understand that this is wrong? Image magnification and F-stop. 25mm and a 50mm have the exact same DOF at the same stop at the image magnification (i.e. one is closer, and one is farther away to have the same frame).

arrrg.

Slow down cowboy. I'm talking about ways to make eye focusing easier in uncontrolled doco type situations under available light. I say plenty of stupid stuff without anyone's help, please don't infer that I don't understand FOV or DOF. Thanks.

While we're on the subject of focusing by eye on the barrel without a FF or puller. As Steve mentioned in his post, many experienced cam ops have developed the skill of "anticipatory focusing" so even at 4K or 5K (S35 target) we can manage to hold focus. Try tracking unlimited hydroplanes moving perpendicular to your camera position several hundred yards away on the end of a 100x. Try following a baseball into the outfield tracking focus and zooming in simultaneously.

In any case, the point of this thread is that the Epic can be configured many different ways for many different situations and that rocks. The fact that the core of the Epic system is so small is, ironically, huge. Build it up all you want, but the ability to strip it down when needed - priceless.

Peace - #19
