  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC images...

Ive been overseas shooting a lot over the last few months so I havent had time to dig through the threads. However I did just receive the epic Stage 2 email. Pls help me answer some questions I have...

1.) Is their any prohibition against selling a Red camera and swapping registration once you have received the Epic under the stage 2 program?
2.) Is there any kind of a schedule yet for the shipment of the Epics cameras. In other words once I put down the deposit how long will i have to wait my serial is number 1232?
3.) How long would the RedVolt and RedVolt XL batteries power the camera, and how much do each go for?
4.) What are the other accessories I will need to purchase that arent included in the X package? IS the base-plate included, rods etc?

Thanks so much in advance for the info, its hard for me to find answers in these threads when i fall behind in my reading.

I love the Canons. Despite all their flaws I think they're really something special

For what matters, I think the CANON XL2 was probably the finest prosumer DV camera of its generation. Progressive scan, real 16:9 and great options for internal settings. You could shoot pretty much everything from events to short movies and getting the right look for it. Plus, it did have great lenses.

1) when you have your epic, selling the R1 is no problem

Early EPIC prototypes are working and taking incredible pictures...

We expect the Tattoo EPICs to be out in May.

Given our commitment to debug and enable most features before shipping production models, we expect a 2-3 month shakedown of Tattoo which puts Stage 2 delivery somewhere in the neighborhood of July-August. A lot depends on what happens throughout the Tattoo period.

The program is real... you will see in a few days.

3) dunno
4) depends on what you want, there will be some "bridge" assecoires so you can use your R1 stuff

I love what I'm seeing. Ab-Fab. Keeping with the saloon theme; Epic really could be,

"The Camera That Won The West"; the Colt and Winchester of digital cinematography.

Hopefully "what happens in Vegas", wont "stay in Vegas"!

Wagons, HO!

New images are awesome!

Conclusion: I need an epic now

Shot these in the RED Studios saloon...

EPIC 5K 2:1, RPPs, ISO 800. Grabs from 24fps.

Entire crew was Jarred, Justin and myself.

Cowboy- Dudley
Hostess- Buddy

"Period" grade on Page 15...

Really awesome. I wonder what Roger Deakins, Darius Khondji and Emmanuel Lubezki would think about this.

Yes it is a work in progress...

I feel like pavlov's dog. everytime you post new pics I begin to drool... hooray to you. I so wish I could attend tomorrow.

i like i, too! cool improvements... I love the new battery icon. :) I was about to post some "patrickfeelstolettheworldknowwhattheydontwanttoknowimprovements" to the ui back in the first ui reveal days, including a simpler battery icon... guess I was right in believing in you guys and not posting ;) still one more thing i wanted to add back then: how do you guys feel about highlighting the background of the chosen function and not underlining it (f stop) would eliminate one more distracting element. and my designers soul tells me, there's too many vertical lines having a party on the lower info section. but I guess there'll be more to see after tattoo ;)

btw: any info on how many tattoos will go out to the lucky few?

sigh, can't wait to cradle one of these babies one day....

three cheers to you, cowboys and -girls!

Obviously that Epic is flying on Artemis/Sachtler camera stabilizer systems at NAB!!!

Theres video of this at the Digital Cinema Society

...it's a dream. I can see an op running like a mad man in deep snow and keeping up with talent!!

And it would look like it will also fit perfectly on that awesome Jib-On-A-Steady rig!

Truely amazing... i can't believe its so small. Just imagine what we'll be doing with the Scarlet when its delivered!

Nice images! Since someone mentioned the AF-points and focus pulling via the Redmote, I wonder if it will be possible to set two different focus points and then set the time in which the camera is supposed to pull the focus automatically between the two (or more) points? Maybe that's a feature not many will use, but I imagine it would be pretty simple to do?

And I think it's great that you've put the focus points all over the place. Finally there are people out there who think about important things! :)
It's actually amazing that the old camera manufacturers haven't thought of that before, considering how long they've been making cameras.

only one from me, if you have two REDMOTEs, can two separate people be changing things, such as one is a focus puller and the other is able to change other settings?

And conversely, if two crews are working nearby (as I had this weekend), I assume that you can set each camera to only respond to a specific RedMote?

I apologize if this has already been answered, but there's so much new info that it has become difficult to find answers: Will the Canon mount be available already at stage 2?

This is quite critical question for my needs.

Same for me, so I emailed Red.

Chad replied:
They do not currently have an expected date for the Canon mount being ready to order yet.
Nor can they confirm which lenses it will be compatible with.

Yes, being able to set the speed and "ramping" between the focal points is crucial, and I would presume will be adjustable. Also being able to manually override the end points should a talent move beyond the marks, as you would when manually focus pulling, would be important. I.e. unexpectedly the talent leans forward more than anticipated at the end of a take, and so you would need to over ride the set end point and continue the pull a little bit further.
