  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic, HDRx, and TV post-production

agree on all points jake, except the one about things not changing anytime soon. i believe our industry is already in full-scale change, and although it is not happening OVERNIGHT, there is momentum being gathered behind this change, and more and more shows are open to new ideas, and they listen in the hope of finding the 'best' way to do things. Again, this isn't (nor can it be expected) that it will happen overnight. But over a 10-year period, starting about 4 years ago, this change will have happened. When looking back in decades to come, it will seem that things did indeed change quite quickly.

I can say that I think your overall point about "the importance of having an access to the metadata manipulation, as well as the presence of "X" track, which pretty much directs manufacturers to come up with innovative ways to preserve and utilize that data throughout the post process" is bang on.

I know many here consider Premiere Pro a toy, but to me NLEs are a lot like word processors, and if you know how to write, you can get by on any system just fine - most of what you do at a cutting level is pretty basic, and Premiere has all the same tools for cutting as Avid, plus some pretty advanced grading.

So... We online LOTS of 100% R3D-based 1-hour shows fast and cheap and not even always on the best machines. No Red Rocket most of the time. We do it all by simply using Premiere Pro. No transcodes ever until the final edit, and then we only transcode that AFTER the grade is done. Sometimes we send a final cut to Davinci, sometimes we just grade the clips right in Premiere using Source Settings, sometimes we grade in RCX and then save the sidecar and reload in Premieere

so simple: Drag drop R3D files, play straight in real time, grade in real time, then "print" only once and only chosen clip sections of final edit to an output format.

HDRx handling is working now - not sure if publicly released yet, if not very soon - this too, real time, drag and drop, no transcode.
