I am trying to figure out if I could use EPIC camera live HD-SDI output to record on external recorder in 1080p.
I know I can transcode to 1080 and I did that for all these years with RED MX. I know it is best option.

I hoped that EPIC will give me full range great looking image so in some cases I do not have to transcode 5K files.
What I see on waveform is that black start at 6 % IRE and white clip at 96% IRE. This is not a full range.

Has anybody tried to record externally or test signal from HD SDI connector?

In the Epic manual, it seems you have the option of configuring HD-SDI 10-bit 4:2:2 Y, Cb, Cr or 8-bit 4:4:4 RGB. I'm sure users/owners will chip in with realworld insight - but there's info on page 14 (and more throughout the doc), so I'd presume external recording is possible.

Which external recorder are you looking to use (or used with your Red-MX in the past)?

I wouldn't use external recorder with MX as image quality is not great on HDSDI and it is only 720p
EPIC is suppose to have full quality 1080p output. When that happens I may use on of many coming out external recorders.
I was testing with my Kona 3G card and Leader 5330 waveform.

OK :smile5: - was only asking as there seems to be something related to the clipped range going on when using external recorders going straight to Prores (one thread here http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?256594-AJA-KiPro-is-clipping-the-signal/page4).

Just thought there might be something in the way the Kona records (it's Prores also)... I know the Kona is studio soluton rather than a field one... and you are looking at the scope also... but it might be worth investigating?

I also encountered clipped ranges on high end Nvidia cards used on PC's (an unrelated issue - but linked with range clipping as, by default, the cards/driver worked on a reduced gamma range) which was annoying as the CG studio I was Directing for, had 65 workstations - and all but a handful had this issue, whcih obviously was a real PITA as CG artist's work used to come in with crazy colour ranges.
