  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Firmware suggestions

A long time ago people were suggesting to implement a framestore/recall function for overlaying stills to be able to match shots /angles and also for VFX. The Si2K has it, also with a 50% opacity option and it works great. Would be very nice to have it on Epic as well (if not already on the to-do-list)
cheers

Possibly an unpopular suggestion, but given what Apple's done recently with the notifications in iOS 5 there's a glimmer of hope...

Fully adopt the Alexa method for mag numbering - i.e.:

Format mags blank, do not assign reel numbers on format.
Instead, allow the user to select the "next reel" number.
Assign reel number on first use of the mag.

I realise this is probably much, much harder to make bulletproof than the current system but I can tell you from a rental perspective it would make camera prep far easier as I wouldn't have to pull out a laptop to wipe the cards for the next client.

Likewise from an on-set perspective it allows preformatting without the necessity to choose the specific order of card use - to take a hypothetical if you have a two-camera kit you can preformat all your media on one camera at the top of the day without worrying about burning in camera ID or reel number to the volume name of the mag.

As I said, may not be popular as it's what the Germans are doing, and not how things have been done on the Red side of things, but I honestly think it's a much more sensible approach to reel number management.

Not sure how this would work, but I have a client that want to embedd custom datastring in every frame. (from gps, or other serial source).
Is there a API or dev kit for Epic modules/input?

Can you elaborate on multiple ssd formatting? Not sure what you mean by that.
Auto increment?

Yes.

Instead of :

"Number of the inserted SSD Reel to reformat + 1"

just

"count upwards every time you reformat"

I was working with 4 SSD.

Pat

PS: formatting these SSD is so fast that I don't feel the need to preformat them "in blank" like suggested by Cail.

+1 for this function. Hate having to use a vision mixer for plates etc, which seems to be happening more often than id like.

the epic r3d files should communicate their serial number to redcinex and all the software which uses the SDK.
all posttools ask once in a month for an update and they receive the serial numbers of stolen epics....identified footage cant be rendered out.

but this shouldnt have bugs hehe

Deanan, have you considered making a "relative" compression ratio option, where the camera automatically selects the lowest compression ratio for any given framerate/resolution? I constantly shuffle through framerates, and sometimes I forget to change the compression ratio. So I end up accidentally shooting 24fps at 12:1. It's tough to keep all the framerates and matching compression ratios in my head.

Digged up this old thread instead of starting a new one. I'm on firmware 1.7.9, things are getting better and better :) i thought i give a bit feedback/suggestions

- Is it already possible to flip the lcd complety so you can mount it upside down?
- In the key/shortcuts setting you can now set "toggle display modes" as a shortcut, but i want one specific display mode, Focus, assigned to a key, that not possible now right? Would be nice to have all the options of display modes.
- when opening a drop down menu in a menu, a lot of times i have to click 2-3 times before i get it selected, this only happened in drop down menu's, all the other ones work really fast :)
- possibility to set the transparacy out of your area/frame guides, to have the look around black or semi transparent

1.7.9. working great so far.
What i also like to see for future builds would be a framestore with superimpose function on the LCD/EVF as mentioned before for VFX Work or match cuts.
I also hope for 2k 16:9 with hopefully 300fps and 3k 16:9 with about 150 fps.
Timelapse functions as in Red One as well as pre record

thanks :)

+1 here too. To my surprise the alexa let you do this and I gotta say, for those moments when you need it, it's really handy.

Ability to rotate display on LCD 180 degrees - to display correctly if mounted upside down.

Or is this already in there?

Thanks Deanan. I Understand.

Is pre-recording mode (say 2 seconds prior to hitting record) on 2K 300fps also already on the to-do list?

2 seconds is not quite enough... BTW, is it already enabled on 4K ?

One "tool" I used a lot on R1s was toggling between Raw and Normal BOTH with False Color ON... I like to look at what my waveform does as well as where my False Color/Video Exposure clips are in RAW as another exposure measuring tool. Currently in Epic, you can look at Raw (which fulfills the waveform end) but when you engage False Color, it defaults back to normal Red color and not the Raw space. I'd love to be able to choose Raw or Normal with False Color on... Is that possible on an Epic in the future?
