Arrghhh... EPIC FF35 with Monstro sensor is very great (16-bit, 13 stops, etc.) but i dont want to be only using Red "FF35 format" lens and photographic lens to cover the 24 x 36 sensor.

Hope that will be a 5K mode with EPIC FF35 and be able to use PL Mount lens, even if its not on the spec of that "brain", because thats the only thing that make me wandering if its a good move to go with Monstro sensor.

Seems likely as the exploded view of the mount looks similar..

To suggest, at this stage, PL on FF is possible would confuse too many people as the you would need to explain that it could only ever be used cropped (As most PL lenses don't have the imaging circle to cover).

I'd take the S35 epic and a FF epic and use both as PL 'most' of the time. If this is possible?

regards

Michael

You would also have to explain that the FF epic ('if' you can get a PL mount on there) would deliver 'less' spatial resolution in that mode than the S35 epic. This would be confusing at the moment.

It would however shut up ;-) all the Anamorphic lovers as they could squeeze every last bit of their imaging circles onto silicon! (Wierdcrew??)

regards

Michael

SURELY this will change - yes - for the use of anamorphic lenses, and so that this can be the best PL motion camera that it can be, latitude-wise.
Someone else will definitely offer a PL mount, even if Red doesn't.

In an earlier thread, I wondered about how this announcement would obsolete PL cine glass lenses. And guess what? That's exactly what is going to happen. Glad I've been doing 35mm glass, although I'll have to kiss my Tokina 11-16mm goodbye when (and I do mean WHEN) my Epic FF35 arrives. (2011?)

I think I just got it.
Mysterium X will be ready first. (actually the Mysterium X scarlet is the one with the earliest date of spring/summer 2009.
Red wants sales, not people waiting off for a Monstro PL.

Things change fast around here, but per Jim the Epic sensor will be upgraded for FREE when Monstro is released in 2010. still the case?

markp has it right (I think). Jim stated a while back that Mysterium X will come first and Monstro will be after. EPIC buyers will get a free upgrade to Monstro as of the last time he posted about it!!! So I'm guessing it's just a timing issue.

For me, the EPIC FF35 looks like the best choice for a cinema camera if one can afford it. It's one of those deals where it should be usable all the time as a S35mm camera with an appropriately cropped frame size. Then also be able to shoot FF35mm if renting the appropriate lenses. I'm seriously intrigued about the RED "ELECTRONIC" FF35mm lenses too.

Actually, I'd say if the FF35 doesn't support PL Mount lenses then it's pretty much just an expensive Stills Camera. If the only option for shooting on it is either stills lenses or Red's own lenses, I can't see how it will be acceptable within the larger film industry.

jeff just shed some light on this whole lens issue for me. if you get the FF35 sensor, it just gives you the OPTION to shoot FF35 lenses. It would also give you the option to shoot S35mm lenses I would imagine, with absolutely no downside. I am sure there will be menu and format options to make this very easily achieved. Thanks Jeff, one of my two worries is now gone, and I will be going with the FF35 brain myself.

hint....

Exactly. Looks like all the Epic brains are the exact same dimensions, just different sensors in them. That would mean you could put any of the detachable lens mounts on them. I wonder what the crop factor will be for PL lenses. I hope it'll be 5K.

I'm with Jeff. . . I'm convinced that the sweet-spot will be the Vista-Vision FF35. I can see no reason at all go larger, and only a lens issue to go smaller.

The beauty? We get even narrower depth of fields and can crop down a bit and still be at true 4K. There will not be delivery systems widely available in theaters or to consumer beyond 4K during my working lifetime. (I'm almost 52.)

You should still be able to use cine glass on the Epic's FF35 sensor, but it may or may not be a full 4K resolution, depending upon the pixel sizes (I haven't done the math on that).

Such a stinking tease, I bet that restrooms around the world have stuff written about you. I bet it goes like this.

"There once was a man named Jarred
such a smart ass I couldn't bare it.
he said with a smile, and the hint of guile
So just shut up and buy it

Don't worry, don't fret for you haven't seen everything yet
there's way more than just Red One.
If your quick you'll beat Adobeone! "

how come you guys didn't announce the ultra-high-frame rate brain?

I think they did - they just haven't said so yet.

I'm seriously hoping my 5k s35 scarlet has windowed capabilities beyond 30fps. Who says it can't do 120 fps at 3k as well as the lower models? That would make sense with the current R1 product scheme, right?

Didn't jim let us speculate elsewhere that epic could do something like 500 fps at 2k? That would make sense if they were windowing a 9k brian.

Why is this even a question? Of course it'll have Windowed modes. They're just listing the Max Resolution and FPS at that resolution.

As far as FF35/Monstro making PL glass obsolete: this is a really silly statement. STILL GLASS IS NOT MADE FOR FILMMAKING. Proper Markings, Mechanics, etc. PL Mount glass isn't going anywhere.
