  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC--feature request: very High Speed imaging

Sorry this discussion is ridiculouse.
I an wonderung what else you want to put in a camerea.
You wish only 2K at 1000fps. Did you realize that this need a total diiferent signal processing sensor read out sensor and capture structure.
I am sure red could build one but def not for 40K.
Maybe I am to conservative.
I simple want from epic
a liitle more resolution for our dome and panorama shooting
A little more dynamic range
A little less noise
A liittle higher frame rates for moe smooth film. 60 fps at 5K whould be fine.

A little less compression that REDcode really looks visual lossless.
To get this "littles"is alreday the 20K value which epic will cost more
With RED you have a Boing for a price of a Cessna now you asking to do hypersonic speed.
 
Also, you're asking Redcode to do a hell of a lot of work, compressing a ton of info very, very fast.

Not at all: all I'm asking for is a large buffer to be included for a burst of uncompressed data to be stored for a moment. Then, I care not if it takes 5, 10 or 20 minutes to compress all this data to Redcode and record it to the disk/solid state recorder...

And the chip design has to be changed in order to clock it hat fast.

I'm sorry, but that is precisely what we DON'T know! We don't know what this new chip is exactly capable of. We don't know how fast a clock we can run it on for a few seconds (at a fraction of its resolution). We don't know how far it could be pushed. We don't even know that for the current chip.

Only Red's engineers know that information. I'm not asking them to give that information to us. All I'm asking for is for them to at least consider the impact the EPIC could have on the marketplace if it did indeed offer that kind of "very high speed frame-rate" functionality. I know I'm a dreamer, but if I told you 3 years ago that "We will, 3 years from now, be shooting in 4K on a simple compact flash card with a 17.500US$ camera", you would have thought I was naïve, borderline crazy... :)

I know this is all wishful thinking. But who knows? Maybe Red and Visionresearch will eventually cooperate to develop a new, affordable, "Red-Phantom" hybrid of some sort one day. Because you and I, we both know how desirable a tool "High speed imaging" really is. It really opens-up a brand new world of visual poetry.

You wouldn't believe the stress high frame rates put on the chip.

Don't forget I'm only talking about bursts of 3-4 seconds. During those 3-4 seconds, the venting/cooling system could very well be running at full power, because, frankly, I don't care about the camera's noise during those kind of shots :)

The great white was shot on Photron, not Phantom, and it's not HD res, just 1024x1024 I believe.

You definitely sound like the crowd who were shouting "Scam!" when they first heard about Red's "17.500$" pricetag 2 years ago. :) Never underestimate what the Red team can achieve...
 
I've played with the Nikon D3 and it is nothing less than phenomenal. Extremely low light capabilities that get you get shots in natural light with a fast shutter - literally stuff you've never seen before, images you couldn't get before. This camera goes comfortable to 6400 ASA and higher with noise. A DSLCamcorder like this would be a mind blower.

The catch is it the larger sensor but instead of more resolution, it has bigger pixels, bigger sites and it just sucks up more light. Downside? Incredibly short depth of field. Upside? Plenty of speed to stop down and get it back.

Maybe this is another camera altogether. The Enlightena.

Downside - regular 35mm PL mount cine lenses wouldn't work, but rehoused still lenses could. Being able to shoot in such low light is very, very, very interesting. Candelight? No problema. There are places you can shoot with the D3 is more like nightvision. Without the nightvision look. Uncanny stuff.

Be fantastic to have a motion picture capture device with such capability.
