I work for the University of New Orleans Film program and we have a Red epic with dragon chip that will not read any of our Redmag SSD cards any more. It shows a must format card error when inserting a card and then gives a card format error evry time. At first I thought it was a bad card reader, but I went over to panavision new orleans and tested different side card readers and different cards with our camera and one of theirs and we determined that that it either the card reader pins on the camera or an internal camera issue. My question is first has anyone had this issue and if so, were the able to get any resolution? Red support says there's nothing they can do but I'd to brick the whole camera package. Anways anyone's input is appreciated! [I had posted this on the dragon board but thought I'd try here as well]

Hey Aaron, sure there may be any easy solve for this.

Keep in mind, that camera is like 10 years old (not a critique at all, I have 3 of them, haha and they have been very stable).

But like anything old (and probably well used, at your school) repeated use will beat up anything.

So looks like yes, the actual pins INSIDE the camera are bent, or broken. Which would give you those errors, etc.

But there's an easy fix for that.

You could just replace that side module. Here is a replacement:

You could also upgrade to a mini mag module:

One of the advantages of RED's 'modular' system from DSMC1 and DSCM2 is exactly this. If a 'part' breaks you can just replace it, haha. As opposed to needing the whole thing fixed, etc.

Hope this helps.

I'm afraid I did not explain this properly. I am well aware of red's modular system. It is one of the reason's we purchased the system many year's back. I tried several working side modules on our camera and they didn't work. I tried our side module on a working epic (at panavision new orleans) and it worked just fine. unfortunately its not the modular part it seems to be an internal camera issue. Sorry, I was a bit misleading in the original post. I really thank you for your detailed reply, unfortunately it won't do me much good since replacing the side module didn't seem to help. I think we've just decided to retire the camera. We have a new v-raptor system and two komodos that should cover us.
