will it ever be possible to equal or beat 35mm films latitude in a digital sensor. right now resolution easily equals what we get with film. at least for acquisition. while I think 5k is great I don't think 4k is all that far away from 35mm films resolution.

there are only 3 reasons I can imagine for EPIC to exist.

1. Weight, lower weight will help in certain applications
2. Dynamic Range/Latitude. this is the last outpost that film still excels at. I think a guy like jim wants to at least equal the DR of film and beat it if possible.
3. High speed cinematography at high resolutions.

Eventually sensors will far exceed film, it's only a matter of time. Someday we'll be able to shoot motion HDR. And we'll have hoverboards just like in Back to the Future II.

14 is fine; many DI scanners internally work in 14 bits. I derived the 19 bit number as more of an "ultimate" number after considering some design criteria, and psycho-physical measures.

Also remember that film stocks are better now then they ever have been.

Red is easily as good today as film stocks were in the 80s and early 90s.
