  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC, DR, HDR and stuff...

...From Peter Jackson, JJ Abrams, David Fincher, Steven Soderbergh, Doug Liman, Dariousz Wolski (to name-drop a few)...
Jim

I would be interested in more DPs names than directors. Six names and only 1 1/2(Soderbergh) are DPs? Wouldn't it be more effective to name DPs e.g. Cronenweth instead of Fincher? Although probably good for marketing efforts I'd trust fellow DPs more than directors when talking about a camera.

Sorry to agree and then disagree. The ones who have final creative control of the image matter. That includes both DPs and Directors depending on the situation. Trust me when I tell you that Fincher decides what camera will be used on his movies. Cronenweth did an incredible job shooting, no question. But Fincher decided to shoot RED.

Jim, do you guys have a rough idea of how close to RT a RED Rocket will manage to get? 5k 16bit sounds like a lot more than 4.5k 12bit.

Great to hear you are close. We are happy with you!

We are working toward a firmware upgrade that will support EPIC 5K to existing RED Rockets. Just as you would expect.

Jim

Fuck yes! I feel like im one of the few who appreciates the value of the RED ROCKET... that is fantastic news! I

Hey Jim. glad to have you back on the boards. Pardon my french, but I seriously love love the RED ROCKET. It prints money almost every day for us.

Limon (like Soderburgh) is also a DP and I think it's pretty safe to say that Jackson, Fincher and Abrams know a thing or two about cinematography. Besides, no matter how much you as the DP may love a tool, if the director doesn't trust or understand it you can be guaranteed you won't be using it.

I think you can expect to playback 1/2 quality 5K realtime (good for just about everything)... and transcode just a bit slower than 4.5K does now.

When do we get some hints about the HDR mode to keep our reptillian geek brains humming?

progressive exposure ala phantom? Multi-sample fast shutter? Successive exposure? Alternating pixel column gain?

In keeping with RED philosophy... a new way. :-)

Sure, but I as a DP have to light the scene and work with the camera's DR, nobody down the post-pipe will have fun with the footage if the RAW hasn't been properly exposed. And in 99% of the projects the DP is doing that job.

So yes, on one hand the final image is of course what comes onto the screen, but if there is no groundwork for that...

Do we have to sacrifice a kitten and perform an arcane ritual for every 60 minutes of footage? :D

What's going to be the trade off?

Jim, thanks for the post. You've provided many nuggets in less than two pages. Keeping us alive out here. I'm extremely happy to hear about shutter sync for 3D.

In mentioning the methods of HDR, I was reminded of some 3D tracking ideas... With excess FPS, would it be possible for the camera to generate 3D spacial maps for tracking and such? Maybe a module? Even the option to generate a separate XML file with some mapping info would be incredibly useful.

Jim, just out of pure curiosity, do you ever listen to the "Redcentre" podcast that Mike Seymour and Jason Wingrove do?

There is no question that the industry is moving to a 4K delivery. Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, Samsung, Epson, Barco, Christie, Chimei and others have, or are poised, to release 4K displays. There is no turning back.
OK, 4K is the future. But what about Scarlet 3K ? Will there be a resolution (bigger sensor) upgrade before the release ?
