  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

epic decision: weighing the handheld options

@Jarek -- Curious to hear what you've got going. I'm guessing shoulder pad from Mantis and handles from All Star? Please do share!

Yeah, Mantis shoulder pad, RED baseplate collarbones and dogbones, Allstar grips and some bits from Wooden Camera. Still working on my Arri to Red Rosette issues. But this combined with the Assault plate should be perfection. After years of camcorder rigs all the way out in front of me with a support rod attached to my hip I can't wait to get the cam right over my shoulder again.

Hi Mark. Can I ask what mono pod you're using?

Great "no hands" operating:)

Any mono pod works, just make sure you have the bigger 1/4 inche screw thread. I dont trust the small thread.

And yes, no hands for up to 2 seconds... before Mr gravity takes over.

Thanks for the responses! Very informative. It's interesting to see the range of different solutions. Epic is truly the Harley Davidson of cameras.

Looks like I'll be going with the DSMC shoulder pad (attached to Red QR plate), with universal adapter in the back plus Quickplate and possibly really short rods. And I went with the Spidergrips for handles, as they seem very light weight, well constructed, and the price is right.

That's what I decided to do. Waiting for Assault plate for lightweight 15mm rods for Arri MFF-1 plus Spidergrips, added the pad for behind the shoulder support. I find that keeps the HH rig from falling forward when pointing the camera down.

When the Quad Battery Module shows up, I'll hopefully bag the VMount batt and hope that it is indeed lighter and more balanced. With a Pro I/O module between the brain and the batts, it should be OK.

Good news. The RED Modular Assault Plate is starting to ship.

I went with the Clutch but only using one short 19mm rod to mount the chest pad. 15mm LWS rods for the matte box and FF.

Hey Fredriik do you have a price range in mind yet. Also PM me If you are interested in someone in New York doig some beta testing and Pic/blog for you. :-)

We're hoping to go midrange between the clutch and for example the mantis... BUT thats for the package, which also includes EVF mount. Can't make any promises, but that's what were aiming for and don't forget this would be high end with a lot of it being titanium.

Edit: I'm sorry for my grammar and spelling - I'm writing this on the road with my iphone
@Fredrik I'm curious to see what your idea is said:
Hi, it's based on quick release - so mount the shoulder pad onto the quickrelease plate under the camera (were making one even slimmer if you want use that - saving more or less 10mm in thickness - this makes it that the lens will end up in exact eyeline (on a normal person lol). BUT u can also mount the shoulder pad onto a system that holds in any position around the camera - behind the cam in high or low position - this is good if you for any reason want to have the cam infront (personally I will probably never do so, but it's there for people to be able to). This is a quick turn around with quick release and slide in and out - so it's literally only a matter of 30secs.

The shoulder pad has a connection for you to add a rod system so you can attach things behind it for balance, such as battery plates or whatever you want. This is also just a matter of seconds to do so.

Yes, we will include handles in our system - that's not obstructing if you want to mount 1 or 2 focus/ iris motors on the lower rods - this is also a couple of second to connect system and all is made with no need of tools or screwing things on (as if it for example was rosette connections)

I'm sorry if I sound cooky or if it sounds to good to be true, but I'm honestly super exited about this as I, when we started, put down crazy parameters for what was needed and I truly feel that after 3 months of extensive designing. We cracked it :)

As I said the proto is done in 4 weeks and then it will speak for itself. If u can hold on for now or get cheap solutions until we're done. I do suggest you do so, because honestly this system is the one I've been waiting for and I'm extremely picky ;)

Thanks for this breakdown. That's quite an ambitious project! And sounds really cool. I hope you will consider selling the components individually as well, because Epic owners will have a broad range of specific needs.

@Jarek That would be awesome if it weren't for that Rosette issue, once that adapter comes out you'll be styling

I'll post pics of my set up in the next few days when I get all the components together.

Cool news about the assault plate! Where did you hear that?

What adapter? I'm kinda making my own solution atm. I know Woodedn Camera is planning one but not anytime soon if I remember correctly.

Don't you need an Arri to Red rosette adapter for it all to work?

Edit: please excuse spelling and grammar. Still on iPhone driving lol
Hi guys,

This is a quick specification of the system (hope it makes sense)

I've got a few requests on people wanting to have a first proto. We can maybe assist of this (I'd its not to many), but know that the 1st proto's are alu and not titanium. We will look into the possibility for "upgrading" or even change to te titanium for them, bur no promises. It all depends on what kind of orders we will get once this is out.

1) small quick release plate with cam lock mechanism for tooless operation. Epic compatible.
2) Connection plate(to camera) with direct connection to rod bracket 19mm (titanium) epic compatible.
3) Cam lock patended design rotary angle for shoulder pad +/- 10 degrees of rotation - no tools
4) slide front to back shoulderpad for perfect balance +/- 25mm total 50mm
5)Carbon fiber or aluminum 7075t5*shoulder pad with soft pad.
6) New gearlock connections with Quick release snap off-tooless design for most connected parts.
7) New handle bones either titanium or 7075 t5 aluminum.
8) ball mount grips
9) New design arm titanium or 7075 aluminum, for displacement of the Shoulder pad and quick release for behind Epic operation.
** it can be placed tooless at any angle and even at specific angle that can work even with the RED-VOLT QUAD but giving best balance(no front heavy beasts) Adapters for battery V - mount that can also be placed at any angle and height for the best possible balance available so far.
10) top plate with patended adaption for EVF ARM that can position the EVF AT any angle, height, or far or closer to the camera body. It can also work
**** at some extent with more extreme possitioning of the EVF no matter what the operator eye view is low or high.
tooless operation for evf possitioning.

I think Allstar is making some rosette adapters.

Nope...I asked. I am getting extra arri rosettes from them and re-drilling mounting holes to replace a set of rosettes on a pair or red dogbones.

Wooden Camera made a comment about making some, but no timetable yet so I can assume they are pretty far out.

In theory it's pretty simple. A metal disc with arri teeth on one side and red on the other, then just use in-between components.

I got a FedEx tracking number. It will be here tomorrow. Unfortunately both of my cameras will be out on rentals so I won't be able to test it until next week.

Ha Ha. That's a pretty concrete notification! Congrats. How long ago did you order it? Mine was ordered early August.

Now this is the setup that makes so much sense to me. First it's very low mount, truly the "cat on a shoulder" concept. Looks well-balanced with the battery on back. Plus, it would be extremely quick to switch from tripod to shoulder with no setup. Just remove from tripod, place on shoulder and shoot. It takes the idea of the clutch and turns the camera into the clutch itself. I want something like this!
