Here is a quick test I did about 10 minutes ago.

The 85mm f1.2 is one of the slowest AF lenses in my package...

This test is exactly that.. just a simple test to see how quick it can pull focus while recording.
No measurements, no lazar readings, no focus wheels, no camera assistant, no guessing, just turned the camera on and pressed the button, you can have it on Single or continuous, (single recommended) large AF area or small... I use small.
In my 25 years of shooting 35mm PL lenses, I have never ever had a focus puller match the accuracy and speed of this quick test, without some serious lens marking, measurements and practise...
Not taking it away from Focus pullers, as I have many great friends that are Focus pullers, but this is technology that is here now and getting better all the time.
People should be aware.

The AF system is not perfect, It will hunt if you don't frame an edge within the AF box... it will not pull focus on a plain flat surface, in a low light or ugly back light situation it will fail... But the more you practice with it, the better, faster and easier it becomes and with newer RED firmware, its just getting better all the time.

Once again, the auto focus cannot track a person / car etc.. walking or running towards you. Thats a job for a professional focus puller.
For everything else... Not a worry.

Thanks

Mark , your video is exellent. I did the same kind of test too , in the last days . And my results are just like yours. The AF single combined with the small Box , find a focus point with some edge , no flat surface , enough light and this think rocks fantastic and very smooth after hitting the button . I think my UP Set with FF5 will stay home for some jobs now . I just don't know how good canon glass really is when using one or more filters .

Nice results, and that's considering that 85mm f1.2 is on the slow side of Canon AF lenses

Thanks for sharing, Mark.

I'm very excited about the AF since the Canon mount was announced.
I really think this is an evolution - or a big change - in the lens world. I'm really happy about this.

Is the focussing system on the Scarlet different than the Epic? My results are far worse. The camera seems to go through the entire focal range of the lens, even if the image is nearly in focus whenever I half-press the button in 'single' mode. What am I doing wrong?

I have the same issue on the 17-55mm f2.8, the only lense I tried for now. What lense are you using ?

When you say small AF area do you mean SPOT?

I just tested it on my scarlet with the 85 1.2 set at 5.6. Same exact results as in the video! Awesome!

I just tried it with the 17-55 as well. Definitely responds differently than the 85 but still hits focus pretty quickly. I'm satisfied
