I just tested out my Epic for the first time. (#01617) Everything seems to be in working order except audio. I have a Rode shotgun mic connected to channel 1 input. The Mic is self-powered, I adjusted the input and monitoring in the menus. It monitors fine, even while I'm shooting. I'm monitoring the headphone jack, not SDI. But when I play back, no audio was recorded. I play back the footage in camera or on a Mac in RCX, same result. No audio. I'm using firmware 3.0.0

I know most people shoot double-system, but even then, capturing sound wild is helpful.

It's very simple, I fixed the problem yesterday: I got 2 Mono adapters custom made! That's it! THe audio input jacks on the Epic are Mono!

You need:

A- A Phantom powered mic
B- A Stereo (female) to Mono (male) adapter

Bingo! You have sound!

Might sound silly, but you did enable the audio playback in RCX didn't you? It's not automatic...

Same with transcodes, you enable the audio separate to the vision.

Also, there is no audio playback in camera yet, this is well known.

If you could hear audio in the headphones during the shoot, and had everything set up right, there is an excellent chance your audio is intact but you just haven't found it yet.

jimhare,
Thanks. This seems to be the most likely answer, because audio is working fine with my current cables, according to my headphones. Too bad about no sound on playback from camera! I hope that is corrected soon.
How do I enable sound playback in RCX?
Thanks again!

jimhare:
Yep, that did the trick. Audio is playing back in RCX now. Thanks for pointing out the obvious! :)
Cheers,

I got a Senheiser MKH60 which is not Phantom powered- will Epic ever support non Phantom powered mikes? Thanks

Edit: I'm not a sound guy. I'm sure there is a mistake in the above question. I'm think what I meant to say is that the MKH60 needs Phantom power but Epic is not enabled to provide that yet. Right?

We have been told that it will, but don't expect the Epic or Scarlet brains to ever handle line-level inputs w/o the I/O Module. You can currently power your MKH60 through a Sound Devices 302 mixer and either pad the output to mic level or adjust the the output from line to mic level on the SD302.
