  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic At 2K

OK, to the science:

Which produces better 1080 delivered results at 120fps?
5K @ RC13:1
3K @ RC6:1

Would love to see extensive compression testing in a lab environment running from 3:1 to 15:1 to make better decisions. Anyone know if this exists somewhere?

This discussion of compression would be useful in another thread.

Agree to disagree. :) You guys do so much I am grateful for that it's not worth getting into. Besides, we have truly pristine 5K in addition to the cropped modes so there's the power of choice for those who want it. I just think it's important to understand the limits of 2K should one choose to use it, and not pick it apart too much. It is what it is.

You're one of my favorites at RED, Deanan... don't take the critique personally. :)

More options is always better. It's good to have 2K mode for higher fps even though the IQ is not that great. But for most internet stuff 2K is ok to use to get the high fps shot if needed. If your shot needs higher frame rate and the shot is very important then you get camera that can do it with higher quality to match the standards of the rest of the film. 1K in the other hand is something I would personally never use myself.

Oy. Vey.
Sorry that I started such a fuss, Mr. Jannard. I was actually seeking useful information and am sorry to see the thread devolve.
Cheers,
Harry

Harry…THANKS for posting or starting this thread, no you didn’t start such a fuss, not your fault.

It actually helped me get a better understanding of EPIC and Scarlet-X. Some of the things that Deanan and Jim and others chimed in on ARE indeed useful and important to keep in mind. So take the good with the bad, make a mental edit of what was worthwhile of course.

Cheers,

Eric

I see it this way.

The EPIC is a 5k camera for 4k, 2k, 1080p finish (keep going all the way to 240p on YouTube if you want)

With 5k being the principle acquisition and offering up to 96 fps (amazing at 5k) the I would need a very compelling reason to go below 3k for offspeed shots (assuming I have to blow those shots up for a 4k finish or reconform down the road).

For these reasons I stay away from the 2k windowed modes. The Descision is based on possibly needing to finish at 4k one day. 300fps is a tempting offering but I'd take less fps and higher resolution I a second.

As for putting on a b4 adapter and always shooting 2k on an EPIC.

Sure, send me that Ferrari but make sure it can never come out of first gear. Maybe ducati will release a three wheeled motorcycle. Maybe Rolex will come out with a Swatch.

My point. Just get some super35 mm glass and shoot 4k at 150. Your girlfriends hairdo and brothers garden hose shots will look just as good. :)

In large part I agree, but I guess higher frame rate is priority for some?

I like the overall point you make… in essence EPIC was not primarily designed to shoot 2k. The design and engineering focus is 5k. The 2k is an option, but is not the principal strength of the camera. I love the look of very high res and high DR capture and substantial down sampling. Have been doing it for decades and it’s hard to beat. This is why RED I believe seeks to go to higher and higher resolutions (sensor wise) as THAT once down sampled to let’s say 4k delivery will also substantially raise the apparent quality of the imagery. No doubt time willing RED can bridge the gap on lower priority capabilities.

Cheers,

Eric

i gave an opinion based on my own experiences. I understand 2k is already improved in latest firmware. I am just talking about my own experience. The fact the people get angry on here and look to talk crappily to each other makes me very sad.

All I do is try my best to help people based only upon my own experiences with everything from cameras to rates to how I shoot. Take it all with a pinch of salt. One person's opinion is just that. One person. No need for any hate here. Just love please.

F*** the haters Philip. Some of us appreciate your work. Glad you're posting.

Actually, love the haters. The way to defeat your enemy is to make them a friend. Nice to see a Bloom post. I have been following Sir Bloom for years - cool kat.

Like 'Slum dog millionaire ' , it's 2k bayer

Not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread, but shooting a Red at 2k is pretty much the same quality as the little SI2k, which is a 2k bayer camera. Looked fine in Slum Dog.
At these low pixel counts, the debayer strategy is critical, to say the least. You just can't get real 2k pixel on-pixel off type of sharpness on edges, but so what .... Shoot 3k instead.
BTW, the si2k guys must be really sore after the Scarlet news. Oh well, it's still good for small SBS stereo rigs.
