  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC and RPZs (zooms)...

Unfortunately 1/2000th sec. even so, great, is some what, a bit less then what I would have loved to have on the Epic's

It aint over til the fat lady sings.

RED One can do 1/10000th.

I've used it a couple times. I'm sure you can trick the Epic the same way by using relative shutter speed and upping the frame rate. Except now it will be in 5K.

It actually exists in beta form... :-)

Back on topic. Will RPZ support Vignette reduction? You've got a lot of dynamic range in that sensor now. Would you be able to increase the RPZ ranges if you chracterized the vignette and coded it into RPZ? Or would other artifacts make that impractical (shift in DOF?)

Damn the topic! There's a FF35 Epic in existence? Even on the test bench?!

Hands up all those who were saying it would take Red another year at least to release the FF35 models. HA! I say. And again I say, HA! This is Red.

Now, where are those heart tablets?

Raises hand. :undecided:

I still say that sounds about right. At least for FF35 Scarlet.

Don't forget they still have to release EpicS35, ScarletS35 and Scarlet3k before EpicFF35 and ScarletFF35.

scarlet fixed

The 2/3" models are 3K
The S35 Scarlet is 5K (limited frame & data rate as compared to Epic and few other details)
The FF35 Scarlet is 6K (limited frame & data rate as compared to Epic and few other details)

 Peter

how about with the with the old 18-50mm Red Zoom? will that cover the Epic sensor pretty much the same as the 17-50mm?

Lenses are re-usable and thats the great news.

If we get to do this (or even close to it) on the still mode on Epic I would just simply faint.

really..I wouldn't, I'd think "this is what I'm used to from a stills camera".. though faster would be better.. 30sec for long exposure is all I'm used to, more would be better..

From a still camera you mean DSLR, which I usually take all the way to 1/8000, but on MF is not the same , so if with the Epic, even so it is a S35 sensor, I can get as close to it, I would be amazed!!

I still like to shoot extremely high speed subject, and be able to freeze that capture, sync flash for it would be as great as well.

I'm talking about Still capture here btw, not motion as in the R1.

there is no way you are use to 1/10000 from a stills ... canons best is 1/250th

a $30000 phase one can get you 1/8000 but i dont know of anything that has the shutter speed of 1/10000 not even the red one

Set shutter to 1/2000.
Turn on syncro mode.
Adjust syncro up to 1/10000th.

For Canon you mention fastest shutter speed w/ flash sync (overall fastest is 1/8000th on pro DSLRs, 1/4000th cheaper DSLrs)

Phase One you mention overall fastest shutter speed (flash sync speed depends on what camera it's attached to but absolute best case scenario is 1/1600th, usually more like 1/125th).

So I'm not sure which we're talking about.

Either way, I've never gotten even close to needing 1/4000th, even shooting NFL, so if that was where Epic ended up being limited I'd be fine with it. Plus, Jim said they were still working on it. So I don't know why we're worried about this.

Engineers have told me to expect much higher shutter speeds for shipping EPICs.

Pro Canon cameras all 1D series, shoot 1/300 sync with all type of flashes, non-pro bodies 1/250.

However when used with the new PW 5&Mini I sync the 1D III/1Ds III @1/8000, this are just not HHS shots for fast moving objects but also a choice for High Speed Photography to create a certain look, and or over power the direct sunlight, as when the flashes are in such High speed sync they create continuos bursts of light almost serving as a continuos source of illumination on to your subject.

This is the reason Ii wish to have this capacity on Epic if possible, off course Still photography still comes Close second to Movie mode.
