Hi!

Will EPIC be able to shoot Redcode 28 and Redcode 36? That would ensure that the recording media from the RED ONE will be fully compatible with the EPIC.

Additionally, it will insure a smoother transition for the RED ONE owners. Buy the brain only - nothing else - and you'll have a shootable package, using almost all the other accessories you already bought (RED LCD, RED Viewfinder, Top Handle, CF cards, RED DRIVE etc etc). Later, you can upgrade your recording media to take full advantage of what EPIC offers.

Not necessarily.

REDCODE 28 and 36 represent MB/s for a specific format -- in this case, that's 4K 16:9, 12bit RAW, 24fps. The actual MB/s of what you record with the RC28 / 36 codec will vary depending on your format.

If we apply this same thinking (or compression schemes) to the S35mm EPIC, then that's 5K 16:9, 12bit @ 24fps at the same compression ratios. We would expect something like 40MB/s for RC28 and 52MB/s for RC36.

Some media will handle those, some will not. I think the RED Drive, RED RAM, and 16GB CF cards would be good for both those modes. 8GB CF cards would probably only be good for the RC28 flavor of 5K @ 24fps.

...I'm just looking at numbers and I'm sure there are other factors to be considered.

Regardless of the numbers... it would be good if EPIC offers REDCODE options (well below 225) that insure most of the current RED ONE media will be able to handle them.

It will.

The REDcode numbers for Scarlet and EPIC are now bigger picture numbers accounting for more factors affecting the output. It's too early to start pinning stats on them.

A response (from Stuart) to this question in another thread was that the current Red Drives will be able to do RC 42 at 3k. He didn't say anything about RC36 at 4k, or any other resolution, which has left me wondering if RC 36 would be dropped from Epic and Scarlet, and therefore whether the Red Drive will be really good for anything except a 3k Scarlet and Red One.

Until we test it we won't know for sure what resolutions/frame rates will be supported. We'll know more when we get closer to releasing the cameras.
Safe guess is that 4K RC36 should also be fine on EPIC.

Couple of quick figures......

I'm setting 4K/30fps/rc36 as a compression ratio of 8(for comparison)

Say RC36 maxes out the Reddrive/CF cards....(they might take RC42 which is great.)
The point is of the chart is to find out when I'll need to upgrade my Redrives to maintain the compression rate of RC36.

Chart shows Scarlet even on RC42 will have higher compression than Redone. As will Epic S35 if you need to use RedDrives.
