EPIC and Alexa...

I was not questioning why Mr Jannard and Red keep pushing the envelope with new products and new initiatives, its in their DNA. I was questioning why the discussion always veers off when the current offerings superiority over all else is brought into question. No one can tell Mr Jannard how to do it better, he created the mold for his company, but I think many discussions here could be more open.

why not skip MX on epic at all and go straight to monstro, even if it means to wait 6 months more, r1 mx is here to close the gap :posti:

nominations for the after monstro chip name:
1.redzilla
2.lava-x
3.kelly

Do we have working prototype redcode RGB444 rec. mode in Epic yet, I'm quite interested to see what the noise floor will be like after the in camera resample?

Mr Jannard

Curious as to how/why these conversations always turn into what's coming in the future. I have the utmost respect for the way which you have built a company that changed digital imaging forever, but as a DP I must use the tools available to me for a certain job, and comparison and testing is part of how we make our choice. I am certain that Sony, and Arri have their future product development plans, but we gotta work with what we have now. It seems that the discussion always veers towards future initiatives whenever there is a question of Red's, current offering not winning hands down. No disrespect meant just curious.

The RED ONE M-X has yet to be beaten all things considered. And it is available now.

Ed, this particular thread is a comparison between two, yet to ship cameras, the Red Epic and the Arriflex Alexa. As Jim says, Red M-X is available now and compares pretty well with what you can buy/hire today.

Red's business model can be viewed two ways. Hype or openness. There is no doubt that the constant edge-of-seat feeling here, waiting for the next big announcement is a great marketing ploy. Personally, I'll take responsibility for my own addictions and embrace the constant flow of information and willingness to take feedback Red offers. The camera we're using today is a much better tool because of it.

Nobody could ever accuse Jim or anyone at Red of not being open. Redusers maybe, Red never. Yes, there's been a lynch mob feeling here over the last couple of days, and that's not good. But one thing to take into consideration is that, given the pricepoint of Red cameras, many, many more people have their lives and their businesses built upon this one camera. Guys (like me) with comfy gigs and no gear finance to pay, and guys like rental companies who are just as happy to rent whatever they have in their fleet, don't always get how critical it can be for freelance owner/operators that they get a fair go. The vast majority of these guys couldn't afford an Alexa or an F35 if they wanted one and need their Red to be accepted so they can feed their kids and pay their mortgages. Guys like me with a weekly wage can sometimes get a little careless with what they publish and, if that kinda talk could lose another guy his next gig, then I fully understand why they might get a little edgy.

If some people feel a little unwelcome here when they voice their opinion, they should take into consideration what's at stake for many here.

Shane, aren't the Alexa's shipping? I saw them shooting on NCIS LA in Hollywood at Boardners last week. We went for a $3 beer and they were closed but there was a Paramount crew shooting with 2 Alexas. On a network TV show. Test do you think?

Alexas are in the wild and AFAIK they can record 4444 with the right media.
I am not sure if they can record Log-C to prores. That is not: I don't think they can, it's just: I don't know.

That said, I think this might be a good time to re-suggest the possibility of a linear view option out of the camera (like the "linear" option in some of the post software. Or a log one.

The Alexa's currently in the wild are beta's with not all functions enabled and no RAW output at the moment. Just as there are Epics out there being tested in Beta.

I've read this forum for a couple years, and not noticed this as a pattern, and I've seen quite a bit of very open discussion.

Hi,

The Alexa 'Beta' cameras have more enabled than the cameras delivered to customers not part of the beta test program.

Ed.

Mitch Gross informs me that Alexas have been shipping for a few weeks now and that they're out shooting in the wild. I guess we are comparing a production model with one yet-to-ship. My mistake and I apologise.

I stand by my other comments.

Maybe you're right. Maybe we need to see charts comparing Red One M-X to the Alexa. Jim?

Yes. I've recorded log C to KiPro. So it can record LOG-C to Prores. Not sure about the module as it was not operational yet.

I'm wondering if Alexa will push RED to get a ProRes module out the door.

It definitely colors the perception of workflow differences between the two cameras and seems to be a relatively simple gap for RED to close, unlike what appears to be the extra stop of DR, which seems like a much bigger, more expensive challenge.

Or maybe it is not, what do I know?
