  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

You've all seen a ton of comparisons of RED ONE / EPIC vs. Alexa. Thing is, you most certainly haven't seen it on a 4K screen. Hm. Well, let's simulate that on the small (computer) screen...

Imagine the frame size below (1920 x 810) being the 4K projected image. Take an image from the EPIC / ONE and screen it (still 1920x810). Take an image from the Alexa scaled down accordingly (resulting in an image of 720 x 304) and screen that on your "4K" (=1920 x 810) screen. Now let's see which image looks better, shall we? :)

I know this is kind of a stupid, crude comparison, but I think it get's the point across :) Just sayin...

Click on the image to see it in full fake-4k-resolution...

Very nice!

You should really do the comparison properly, lining up the shot the same on the other camera, rather than image processing the Epic shot to simulate. You'll be surprised when you compare it to the simulation...

So shoot it with EPIC and Alexa and then do the image processing I just did? Ok now I'm curious, will do that in the next few days...

Yes, compare the Alexa shot to the downsample resolution trick from the Epic. Make sure you've got lots of good fine detail in the shot.

Tom, be careful. There may be people reading who've had their sense of humour surgically removed.

Ok cool, will do. Might get that done tomorrow evening, so stay tuned everyone.

With this kind of 'stupid, crude comparison' I can make a 3K image look just as good as a 4K image. This proves nothing.

It's a silly comparison. But even more so when it's wrong:

Alexa is 1920 pixels wide via SxS or SDI. 1920 pixels on a 4096 pixel wide canvas is 46.875% of the 4K width.
Your canvas is 1920x810 which means that you should start with a 900x380 pixel "Alexa" image and scale that up to 1920x810.
