Could this be the big NAB surprise? Just speculation, but that would be huge...

Unfortunately, I think this would go against every "pro" idea RED is striving for. If you can afford a $28,000 camera, you should assume you'll be able to afford lenses.

Epic 8x fixed: $95000.00:hat:

NAB surprise - RED Relativity Drive - transporting RED customers into the future, where all cameras and accessories exist in abundance!

Coming 2011... no wait 2012... actually it will ship Q4 2013... now available for preorder 2014.....

I dont believe it would be a success considering directors have their own preferences for lenses, so they would probably rather pick and choose lenses instead of being given no option.

They could use the normal Epic. A Fixed 5k Epic would huge for Indies I think. It's just a guess though. Could be way off...

why wouldn't the Scarlet be enough for indies? I think even the Scarlet 8x is simply too good for the majority of the indies - including me.

The same reason every indie is not shot on Super 16. I am buying a Scarlet fixed and I would buy an Epic fixed also if one was ever made available.

To have an Epic 8X fixed would require a lens many times larger and heavier than the Scarlet fixed, would it not? I don't think it would be possible to accomplish this in the same form factor, which I think is one of the big advantages of the Scarlet Fixed...

A lot of indies have been shot on super16 or its digital equivalent. This year's big one is Black Swan. Last year's best film Oscar went to The Hurt Locker, shot on S16 and Phantom. It is a very practical format for all kinds of work.
S35 format is not practical for a fixed lens camera. Wide range fast zooms are too big and expensive and a compact one would be too slow. Basic physics. Interchangeable lens is the only thing that makes sense.

Yeah, I realize it would have to be larger. I was thinking something with a bit longer range than the RED 17-50mm T2.9 Zoom which I believe only is slightly over 4 inches long from the front of the lens to the lens mount. Obviously, that would still not cover the same range as the Scarlet fixed so it may not be viable.

Yes, I know Black Swan and The Hurt Locker were both shot on S16. I'm sure you're right about a fixed lens Epic just not being practical.
