Can anyone give us their experience/guidance on what kind of offload times we should expect shooting 2:40:1 on an Epic at 5K with 5:1 compression?

How much might that change at 8:1 compression and would anyone advise against that?

We will be offloading 128G SSDs to a G-Speed dS over eSATA.

Appreciate any help!

Mark

Your offload times will not change because of the compression. It will be the G-Speed and your computer that will determine your speed. For example 100GB of 5:1 will offload the same as 100GB of 8:1, but you will have more footage to offload with 5:1 vs 8:1. As far as choosing 5:1 vs 8:1 it depends what the project is for, framerates, and what the lighting conditions are. For dark scenes you will want a better compression ratio. 8:1 is similar to Redcode 42 so that will give you a good idea of what it will look like... It looks great! Again... It just depends on the project. Also Test Test Test!

Thanks Sean,

We are projecting to 15' high RP screens. I get that 100 gigs is 100 gigs. What I'm trying to find out is how long it will take to offload a full 128G of 5K SSD footage from a RED STATION to a G-Speed RAID using a MacBook Pro 17" with an eSATA Card to the G-Speed. So, eSTATA all the way.

I don't use a laptop but I can tell you that we're seeing about 5.5 GB/min over eSATA writing to 2 destinations simultaneously through shotput. A full card takes about 25 minutes so if you're shooting 5KFF 5:1 this is slightly better than realtime.

If I drag and drop to my big raid only its ridiculously fast... I've never actually measured it though as I'm afraid the results would tempt me to embrace such a haphazard method.
