There are many ways to post and finish EPIC footage ... some are expensive and require heavy-iron solutions ... some are cheap and nasty ... however, if you've been following Sam Mestman's tutorials on FCP X and RED workflow, you'll know that there's a better way:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...-Workflow-All-3-parts-now-up-(and-at-NAB-too)

But be aware, if you made up your mind on Apple's FCP X by using the first version that came out a while ago you need to keep an open mind and try out the latest version - FCP X 10.0.8 .... things have improved dramatically over the last year.

At NAB this year in the South Hall just down the corridor from the RED booth, Sam and I will be demoing a very cool EPIC 4K workflow based around the beautiful 5K images from the EPIC camera ... on the booth we'll be showing:

- an end-to-end EPIC RAW workflow
- cut, color and finish in native .r3ds - no transcoding necessary until final deliverables
- FCP X running over XSAN for multi user collaboration
- DaVinci Resolve and the new 4K Decklink Extreme card
- super fast (1200 MB/s) shared storage from ExaSAN
- NVIDIA K5000 and TITAN GPUs devouring EPIC footage
- 4k monitoring from Eizo
- Sync n Link for dailies prep in FCP X
- iPad review dailies from COPRA
- Thunderbolt to PCI expansion from MAGMA
- integrated SMOKE for VFX and compositing
- on-set media management with ShotPut Pro
- RAW processing with Redcine-X

We'll show MacPros working along side the latest 27 inch iMac and Retina Display MBP in a seamless collaborative shared workflow ... it's a very cool combination of powerful hardware and easy to use software that gets the job done quickly and easily.

Also, during NAB, a certain company from Cupertino is holding invitation only update sessions for press and media on the new powerful features of FCP X 10.0.8 ... so by the end of NAB, a lot more people will know what Sam already knows ... that X is the new 4K!

So, if you're coming to NAB and visiting the RED booth make sure to continue on down the end of the South Hall to the Accusys /ExaSAN Booth - SL#15113 - LumaForge is sharing a booth with ExaSAN showing 4K workflow running on their cost-effective, hi-speed PCIe RAIDs .. these beasts easily handle 5K EPIC and 4K ProRes444 and 4K DPX files.

PLUS, if you've read Sam's most excellent tutorials and you want to know more, come and hear the man speak at our 4K training event on Saturday April 27th on The Lot in West Hollywood ... see details below:

These are exciting times for everyone involved in 4K/5K acquisition and 4K post ... there is now an easier and better way to do it.

Come and see us on Booth #15113 in the South Hall at NAB or the 4K Training Day on Saturday April 27th.

Cheers,
Neil

Sounds interesting, I'll make sure to drop by at your booth (interested in seeing the ShotPut Pro part)...

Also, during NAB, a certain company from Cupertino is holding invitation only update sessions for press and media on the new powerful features of FCP X 10.0.8 ...
How do I get more info or how do I enlist on that one? I've got a press/media visa for U.S. (nothing more tho, so I suppose I'm not one of the lucky ones)...

Sounds interesting. I love me some FCP x and workflow ideas... Wish I could be there!

Stopped by the LumaForge shared booth at NAB and was very impressed with the 4K workflow demo! It also gives me great optimism for FCP X as part of a 4K/5K/6K workflow, and for the future of a certain platform. Thank you Sam and Neil for all your great insight and help today. (And Sam, thank you for sharing your excellent tutorials!)

I have been a believer in FCP-X and Sam has been great at demonstrating its power. I would love to have seen the workflow demo but wasn't able to make NAB this year. I guess I'll have to catch up on my own.

Post NAB feedback ....

Post NAB feedback ....

Survived NAB 2013 - phew ... feet and back took a pounding but it was well worth going ... met tons of cool 4K filmmakers all trying different ways to bring their 4K footage to market.

Apple sent quite a few of their people over to see our 4K FCP X workflow demo ... I think we surprised them with what Sam Mestman is getting out of 10.0.8 running over XSAN and the round-tripping with DaVinci Resolve and SMOKE on Mac ... killer combination for editing, coloring and finishing EPIC footage in it's native 5K RAW format ... even with no RedRocket in the pipeline we were getting real time playback from the RAW footage running simultaneously on a MacPro, 27 inch iMAc and Retina Display MBP.

Talking of Apple, they are very serious about the Pro market as in REALLY serious .... they see FCP X as a very important tool in the professional video market .... so, if you haven't tried the latest build of FCP X, you should download the free 30 day trial and give it a whirl ... it's a paradigm shift in how you approach video editing but once you get your mind around the new way of working it really is quite spiffing ... very fast and agile ... the XML round-tripping with the other apps is second to none.

Sadly, one of the common reactions we got from many people who sat through Sam's 4K demo was that they were totally amazed at the ease of the workflow and pleasantly surprised at how far FCP X had come along but were very distrustful of Apple the company in terms of its commitment to the Priofesional market place (the comment - "Apple is only a phone company now" was heard loud and often) ... I brought up this issue with the senior Apple managers and while they agreed that the introduction of FCP X had not be handled as best it might have been (cough, cough) they were none-the-less pouring serious resources into it's continued development and improvement based on the feedback they've been getting from customers since it's launch ... so if you take the attitude that FCP X has been very much a work in progress, public beta, since it's launch you'll have a much better view of how Apple are approaching this next phase in the evolution of video editing ... plus, there are some other things cooking in the oven which will re-inforce their commitment to the Pro market.

Also, had the opportunity to discuss the new Resolve 10 features with Peter and Rohit ... the Blackmagic guys are on fire! .... we'll start beta testing Resolve 10 in a short while and let me assure you the BMD engineers are working closely with the company from Cupertino to make sure the XML round-tripping gets even better.

Many thanks to all the RedUser folks who stopped by the booth to shake hands and see the demo .... everybody seemed to really enjoy the EPIC 4K FCP X workflow ... we had the latest Eizo color monitor on the stand .... great to see 4K footage playing back on a $2700 color monitor that you can calibrate totally to spec.

If you didn't make it to NAB and want to see Sam's 4K demo and workflow in action, try and make it along to our '4K MADE EASY' Training Day on Saturday April 27th on The Lot in West Hollywood ... Sam covers a lot of ground and goes into lots of detail on how to get the most out of FCP X and Resolve ... it'll be a fun day - see details below:

Cheers,
Neil
