  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anamorphic is having a renaissance.
More projects are using anamorphic for one reason or another. Angenieux are releasing new anamorphic zooms, Arri are releasing the Master Anamorphic, Cooke anamorphic coming next year, there are other new companies investing in anamorphic. vantage are pumping millions into R&D. Arri are knocking 4:3 Alexa out of the door.

Personally i would love a 4:3 sensor in my Epic, i'd prefer it over the 6K Dragon S35. Are RED missing a trick here?

Anybody else fee like me?

All Red has to do to have a 4:3 “Dragon Sensor” is just raise the height of the current sensor to fit within the “Aspect Ratio”. I personally don’t expect them to announce this to the general public “till-they-are-good and ready”; it’s got to be in their plans, too many Anamorphic Lens announcements to ignore it! Just my 0.02 Cents!

I wonder how this would affect the image when you then have a non-standard sized sensor....height is much more...and you use this for 4:3 projects such as dome/imax and then when you go back to say 2:1, 16:9 etc....you are then windowing the sensor and that is also not a very good thing. I'm fully aboard for a sensor that can cover for dome, but not at the expense of sacrificing image quality by windowing the sensor.

I'd just presume that, alongside the Dragon 6K, there'll be a new anamorphic mode that'll make use of the extra rez - whilst not 4:3, it should be a larger window.

I suppose an option could be an Epic-A (Epic Anamorphic) - as a new unit.

I love anamorphic and projects that are going forwards for me are Epic/Ana... but I don't know if I'd want a pure Epic-A (4:3), as it's good to have the options to switch modes - rather than switch Epics :)

BTW Rob, you must have a good collection of Ana glass now :)

If the sensor was 18mm tall, it wouldn't matter what the width was, you'd just use that 21mm x 18mm area that 35mm anamorphic does. But if the 4:3 area is smaller than 21mm x 18mm, then all that is really needed are some shorter anamorphic focal lengths to be made.

HI Andy, yes, the glass menagerie is growing. :yesnod:

Anamorphic solution would be great. All we need is that 18mm vertical, if Arri can do it, i'm sure Red can!!...what do you think Red?...Epic 4:3.

Johnny i don't see how the extra pixels would affect the image. We just need more vertical. On Alexa you can shoot spherical in 4:3 mode, with a bit of wiggle room for re-framing. Just like when shooting 5K FF.

There are a number of Anamorphic Lenses that have been announced but there is no Hard Data on them yet, the ones that come to mind are: Thales Angenieux Optimo Zoom Anamorphic, Cook Anamorphic Lenses, the new Hawk from Vantages Film which is costing approximately €7,000,000.00 Euros in R&D. I presumed that they are all going to be 2x. I personally think that they should have a minimum focal length of 24 mm, or 28 mm, but that’s just me. How would they fit within a “New Dragon Sensor?” I agree with David Mullen, ACS, when he says the sensor should have a height of at least 18 mm in order to maximize the anamorphic capabilities of the lenses. But we’re talking 2013, 2014, or even 2015 maybe beyond.

Already announced from ARRI/ZEISS and Service vision are; (7) Lenses – Arri Master Anamorphic 2x - LDS (Lens Data System) 35 (17.5) mm to 135 (75) mm @ T1.9; and Thriteen (13) Lenses - Scorpiolens Anamorphic 2x – 24 (12) mm to 300 (150) mm @ T2 Mostly (Over 130 (65) mm T2.8)

Then I guess, according to current size specs on the Dragon sensor it would fall 2.2mm short... ;)

and what is 2.2mm between friends :biggrin5:

We’re NOT talking about the immediate future, (like Dec 2012 –Jan 2013); we’re talking about what comes afterwards, well into the (Future). So we’re not short, we’re just planning for the Future! That’s All!
