  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic 3D on a balloon filming Grizzly bears in Kamtchatka

Thanks for your feedback on this Wendell, you have quite a cool system of your own flying the Scarlet/Epic, really sweet aerial videos on your site!

Problem is that there are propellers on the Soulcam balloon and it makes it fall under an 'in between' category. Plus it seems there are weight limitations and the Soulcam balloon overall weight with Epic3D appears to be above these limits. I can't tell you about all the specifics of the legal permit matters they're working on with the US right now. But what I know for sure is that the Soulcam people really want to be in good standards with US regulations and meet ahead of time the different authorities to have a pre-established relationship with them. That includes giving them a demo of the system and its various safety characteristics in action.

Arnaud,

Thanks. I went back and looked at the regs and you are corect, the limit is 6ft in diameter or 115 cubic feet of gas. You still have the option to request a rules waiver if you can convince them the operation is safe. Easier said than done I'm sure.

love it. 3d please.

i've been thinking about balloons for a while... should've figured everyone else was. good news, now i can think about other things :)

Thanks Ketch.

Glad to see that it could be useful to some projects in the US.

Since you guys seem to be really interested in that tool I'm gonna try to get you a bit more of BTS footage of the balloon and the team in action.

Must be a sick feeling to loose control of the balloon and watch $120K in gear drift off over the Pacific Ocean.
