did someone from red said something about the price or are we guessing?

if it is 30 k, i would update...
if it is 40 k, i would buy a red and a scarlet to my red...

I was told $40K by multiple employees at the RED booth, with the option to apply a $17,500 credit to the total cost if you traded in your RED ONE.

If it's really $40K, I'm a bit surprised.

From what I've read, the difference between the Red One and the Epic doesn't seem that huge...
- 5K vs 4K
- New sensor vs 'old' sensor (upgradable)
- 100 FPS vs 60 FPS
- WiFi vs no Wifi
- lightweight, 6 pounds vs 10 pounds
- 100 MB/s Redcode vs 36 MB/s Redcode
- 2 audio inputs (full size XLR) vs 4 audio inputs (min XLR)
- Full size BNC vs mini BNC (optional breakout box)
Anything else ?

So of course there are major improvements, but you could nearly buy 2 Red Ones + 2 Scarlets for the same price...

Don't shoot me, I'm just trying to understand why the price difference is so huge...

Did I miss something ?

Nils.

with 100 MB /Redcode you will have a huge different picture compared to the one.....but hey this is just theory...we will see

In theory, yes.
But I'm still trying to find reports of people seeing a big difference between Recode 28 and Recode 36...
(haven't been able to test and compare by myself, I don't have my camera yet)

Honestly, you probably won't. It's not as if REDCODE 36 is full of blatantly obvious compression artifacts. And anyway, the SATA interface on the Red One should be fast enough to push 100 MB/s, and less aggressive compression almost always requires less processing power, which means that I can't see a clear technical reason why the Red One couldn't do 100 MB/s recording with nothing more than a firmware update and a new (probably flash-based) digital magazine.

In fact, given that the Scarlet will also apparently support 100 MB/s REDCODE, I'd be pretty surprised if Red didn't update the Red One to allow for this sooner or later. It would be kind of silly if Red's $3K camera supported it while their $17.5K camera didn't.

No one seems to keep in mind that not only are we talking 40k for the body, but you're going to have new accessories for it too. If you look at the picture and the description it says that only SOME of the Red One accessories will work with it. I'm more interested in how much you're going to end up paying after you've bought the $40k body with accessories. Even with a trade-in, that's not a pretty picture for us indie people.

Yeah, maybe Red has done market research and worked out all the angles and I'm completely wrong, but I rather suspect they'd have several times as many customers upgrading at $30K vs. $40K.

you know more then me....i`ll wait what red presents me and if i am in

35k would be fair. Im wondering now if they will accept a trade-in of a red for credit by post. Most of us cant go to USA to trade it in.. If we can mail it in, what will stop customs from charging taxes to Red for picking it up?
