I take my hat off to you guys at Red. What you have accomplished is amazing, truly amazing.

Here is a clip of the first footage shot at 300 fps from my new best friend, my EpicM. But first let me give you a bit of background.

Mix up a one-day, £300,000 shoot in Spain with a Formula 1 car, Pirelli tyres, the BBC and a no-show Phantom. What do you have? Pressure! Up steps my brand new EpicM. Trouble is, it’s still on an early build so it’s “Beta” twitchy and limited to 120FPS.

Then Alan Piper calls me and tells me there’s new firmware for the Epic, 300fps if you need it. I could have kissed him.
I’m busy shooting in London but immediately call Andy Trewartha my Focus puller who’s rigging the camera in the pits in Spain. He’s had a difficult morning. The DOP, Giles Harvey, loves the camera but feels frustrated because he knows what the camera could do.

Andy logs on, downloads the new build and in minutes is loading it onto the Epic while it’s being rigged onto the camera car. And there, amongst a whole host of new functionality, is that magic number. 300 fps!!! So easily dialled in, it’s as if it’s been there forever.

Where else can you get such a camera, where else can you upgrade in the field and where else can you do all this for free? The camera never missed a beat and to quote the DOP
“It’s just such a new and exciting way of working. Broadcast cameras seem so pedestrian”.

We are not a feature film or a multi-million pound drama but we are busy industry professionals, working day in day out, producing huge amounts of programming. And the Red cameras fit in perfectly. They raise expectations, lift production values and bring fun back into shooting.

Gentlemen, the game has changed.

Phil, Amazing first post! Thank you for posting this. I am excited about the capabilities of this system.

Thanks for sharing! I believe you are correct... its a whole new ballgame :)

Gorgeous, Phil! Love how you can clearly read the Pirelli logo all the way through...I'm sure the client did too. :)
There is no question that Epic is a gamechanger in so many ways.

Yes, welcome Phil. Your clip looks fantastic. I love all the water detail especially the bits hitting the front tires!
The clip looks like a 180 degree shutter, but there's instances where some of the detail looks very sharp. Did you shoot at a different shutter angle?

Second Post in 5 years, there's no stopping me now Alan...
Thank you Ketch, a pleasure to be here.
And Eli, the shutter was nearly all relative to the speed, but with some shots we did change, shooting up to 1/800th sec.

I've spent 4 years fighting for my Red One's reputation, struggling to persuade producers even to look at the camera and pushing it onto every production I could. All I know was that in all that time, my Red One never let me down.

But things have changed, I now feel that with my new Epic M, those same people will have to beg for the privilege of using it.

Realy nice how you kept the shot going after the F1 car was completely out. You can still see the pieces of tire (that may have already be on the track, or may be from the F1 car itself) flying though the air.

Hey Phil,
don't get too carried away! lets see if you can keep that post average below 1.00 (per day that is, but seeing how post challanged you are maybe you could go for 1.00 per year) Who let the dog(s) out. he he he!

Just in case you wanted to see a little more for our EPIC f1 shoot. This is a mixture of 5k 120fps and 2k 300fps.
The way EPIC deals with this situation is different class. The functionality of the camera allow's you move fast and change settings and set up's so easily. The budget for camera dept. wasn't exactly...... shall we say abundant (not the first time we've been faced with that) but we were still able to do the work and get the results.
It was truly a pleasure to be involved with and many more EPIC days to come!!

Hey Giles, Some really nice shots in there. Those 300fps shots with water, particularly the car driving through water looks fantastic. Nice job! On the driving shots, like when you were following the car on the track, and CUs on the wheels, how were you operating? Was the camera stabilized?

The camera was on a fixed mount on the tracking vehicle. A combination of it being a race track and so very smooth, and the fact that we are shooting at such a high frame rate meant that it seemed very stable. But thanks both for checking it out
